STUDENT INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES |

The United States Attorney's Office-Eastern District of New York offers a number of student internships (volunteer-unpaid) throughout the year in both our Brooklyn and Central Islip, New York offices. This is an excellent opportunity for students studying pre-law, criminal justice, accounting, information technology, library management, human resources or community crime prevention. Descriptions of these specialized placements are listed below. An individual must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university, graduate or professional school. All students must be U.S. citizens and are required to complete a security application for clearance (which can take several weeks) prior to starting the internship. Students who successfully complete an unpaid internship may be eligible for placement in a limited number of paid positions available under several federal student educational employment programs. The available student volunteer internships are briefly described below. Interested students should send cover letter that includes area you are interested in being placed in; your educational course of study and degree goals; the semester for which you are applying, an updated resume and the most recent school transcript. The letter should also include, as a reference, the name and contact information of a representative from your school. This should be sent by email to USA-NYE-Students@usdoj.gov or mailed to Mary Breen, Deputy Administrative Officer, USAO-EDNY, 271 Cadman Plaza East, Brooklyn, New York, 11201. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Students will be called by supervisor in our office to schedule an interview. Schedules are flexible and determined by student and supervisor.
Information Technology-Student Internship: The Information Technology Division is an area where students will primarily be involved in user support issues in a Windows 2000 environment. They will work with senior staff to resolve day-to-day operational problems with the Local Area Network, word processing, internet usage and special projects. Students will have an opportunity to get exposure to many technical components such as computer repair/troubleshooting, switches, routers, communication lines, etc. Automated Litigation Support/ -Student Internship: Working closely with IT team, student intern will assist in providing Automated Litigation Support to prepare, organize, index, develop, and manage exhibits, evidence, or other data relevant to cases presented in legal proceedings. Knowledge of legal discovery software packages helpful in determining most effective courtroom presentation of complex and voluminous evidence or production of graphic demonstrative evidence. Intern may also assist with courtroom setups. Accounting Assistant-Student Internship: The Administrative Office is looking for a business major (would prefer an accounting major) with a minimum of 6 accounting credits. Functions include expense analysis, budget analysis, report preparation, accounts payable coordination, filing and other functions as assigned. A working knowledge of Excel is required. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to add meaningful experience to their resume. Hours are flexible. Library Legal Information and Resource Center/-Student Internship: This internship would offer an excellent opportunity for growth and learning for students interested in working within a public sector law library environment. In the next year, the law library, which has an extensive collection of print materials, will be developed into a Legal Resource and Information Center (LRIC). LRIC will highlight the many electronic media legal references that are now available and expand training opportunities on the use of those resources to both attorney and litigation support staff in the district. Human Resources Assistant-Student Internship: This internship would require administrative skills to assist in a variety of personnel matters, scheduling training and assisting in the coordination of student placements from law schools and colleges. Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets helpful. Excellent people skills, as well as oral and written communication skills required. Paralegal-Legal Studies-Student Internship: The United States Attorney's Office serves as the principal litigator for the Eastern District of New York to prosecute violations of federal criminal statutes, defend the government in civil actions, and seek the enforcement of a variety of civil enforcement statutes among other responsibilities. Students enrolled in legal studies, paralegal or other pre-law programs are invited to apply for this internship. Students assigned in this area will have the opportunity to work closely under the supervision of Litigation Support Directors in the Civil, Criminal or Appeals Division to assist on a range of projects which will include legal research and analysis, writing, and other administrative assignments as needed. Community Crime Prevention-Special Projects-Student Internship:: The United States Attorney's Office - Eastern District of New York works with a number of programs that involve building safer neighborhoods through increased community and law enforcement partnerships. One of these programs is Operation Weed and Seed which brings together people and resources to prevent and control crime (Weeding), and improve the quality of life (Seeding) in neighborhoods. There are a number of Weed and Seed sites throughout the Eastern District of NY. Another community-based program is Project Safe Neighborhoods, which is aimed at reducing gun violence and crime through coordinated law enforcement and community outreach. The internship will provide the student an opportunity to learn how these programs are implemented at the community-level and to assist in a range of prevention activities from anti-drug and anti-gang education for youth, ex-offender reentry programs and domestic violence prevention. | ||
