Indoor Air Quality Design Tools for Schools

This page contains checklists, software, case studies and other tools to help schools plan, build, renovate, and maintain school facilities.

Checklist of IAQ Design Tools for Schools Recommended Actions

For a complete checklist of actions recommended in the IAQ Design Tools for Schools web pages, see the  recommended actions checklist.  The checklist also identifies the audience(s) for whom each recommendation is intended. Be sure to follow the links to read accompanying explanatory text.

School Advanced Ventilation Engineering Software (SAVES)

SAVES is a free software package that architects, engineers, school officials, and others can use to determine what type of ventilation equipment provides the best advantages for their unique applications. SAVES incorporates two software tools for the school design community:

The SAVES software tools are designed to be simple and easy-to-use screening tools for school designers.

Integrated Building Evaluation and Assessment Model (I-BEAM)

I-BEAM is computer software for use by building professionals and others interested in indoor air quality in commercial buildings. However, much of the information will also be useful to those interested in indoor air quality in schools. I-BEAM contains text, animation/visual, and interactive/calculation components that can be used to perform several tasks including:  conducting an indoor air quality (IAQ) building audit; diagnosing and resolving IAQ related health problems; establishing an IAQ management and maintenance program to reduce IAQ risks; planning IAQ compatible energy projects; protecting occupants from exposures to construction/renovation contaminants; and calculating the cost, revenue, and productivity impacts of planned IAQ activities.

Commissioning Checklist

Building commissioning is a quality assurance program that is intended to show that the building is constructed and performs as designed.  The IAQ Commissioning Checklist will assist in performing a final, independent check to ensure that design and construction features that affect indoor air quality (IAQ) are properly installed and operating.

Case Studies

Examples of real world applications of principles of designing for superior indoor air quality.
