BASIC FUNCTION:

Note:  The Legal Services Corporation seeks to fill an attorney position in its Office of Legal Affairs.  The position will be filled at either the Senior Assistant General Counsel level or at the Assistant General Counsel level, depending on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate. (Only one position will be filled.)

 

Under the general supervision of the Vice President for Legal Affairs/General Counsel: researches and analyzes legal issues of relevance to the Corporation and its grantees and drafts legal opinions and memoranda thereon; negotiates legal documents; analyzes legislation related to the Corporation's functions; manages or assists (depending on experience) with the Corporation's litigation activities; assists with assorted aspects of LSC's rulemaking and other legal functions; and performs other related duties as assigned.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Senior Assistant General Counsel coordinates LSC litigation, primarily through oversight of outside counsel, and may engage in some direct representation. 

 

Assistant General Counsel assists with coordination of LSC litigation.

 

Researches, analyzes and drafts opinions regarding issues of relevance to the operations of the Corporation and its grantees.

 

Reviews, negotiates, and drafts legal documents.

 

Analyzes proposed and/or enacted legislation related to the Corporation's functions and advises in connection therewith.

 

Assists with assorted aspects of LSC's rulemaking activities.

 

Performs other related duties as assigned.

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

General: 

Must be of demonstrated sound judgment, flexible, conscientious, highly motivated, and able to work independently and have strong communication and interpersonal skills.

 

Technical/ Specialized: 

A law degree and admission to or eligibility to waive into DC Bar, at least three (3) years of experience in the practice of law, and superior legal research, analytical and writing skills are required.  For the Senior Assistant General Counsel position, a minimum of seven (7) years legal experience and significant experience in Federal litigation is required; experience in litigation management is highly desirable.  Experience in litigation, administrative law, contract law, employment law, and/or real property law is desirable for each position, as is experience with a legal services program.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Salary dependent upon qualifications and experience, plus an excellent benefits package.
