Region 7 State, Local, and Tribal Programs

Although the 1990 Clean Air Act is a federal law covering the entire country, states and local agencies do much of the work to carry out the Act. In addition, many tribes are now considering or already have developed programs to help reduce air pollution on tribal lands.

The Act recognizes that it makes sense for states, local, and tribal agencies to take the lead in carrying out the Clean Air Act, because pollution control programs often require special understanding of local industries, geography, housing patterns, and other factors. EPA assists state, local, and tribal agencies by providing scientific research, expert studies, engineering designs and money to support clean air programs. Also, to ensure that delegated programs are being adequately implemented, EPA Region 7 conducts Program Reviews.
