CAMPGROUNDS

KLAHOWYA    CLOSED > Expected to open May 1, 2009
Fee: $18

55 campsites set in a beautiful temperate rain forest along the Sol Duc River.
Flush and vault toilets, water, fire rings, tables, garbage pickup, Pioneer's Path interpretive trail is open, and river boat/tube ramp to Sol Duc River.  Two electrical hookups ($10 extra).  Interpretive programs are over for the season.  Located on Highway 101, milepost 212, approximately 9miles west of Lake Crescent. 

KLAHANIE   - CLOSED Expected to open May 20
Fee: $10

20 campsites among hemlock, maple, and 9' diameter old spruce, moss, and ferns along the South Fork Calawah River.
Vault toilet, fire rings, tables, pack out garbage, and trails.  (Pack in your potable water - hand pump well currently not available). 
Located 5 miles from Forks and Hwy 101 on FS Road 29.

LITTLETON HORSE CAMP  - OPEN 

10 dispersed camping/picnic sites are available to service visitors to the Sol Duc Valley and the Mt. Muller Trail System.  Water trough for stock use only is available when all chance of freezing is gone.  Vault toilet, tables and fire grills.

DAY USE

KLOSHE NANITCH LOOKOUT  - The lookout building and the observation deck are CLOSED due to safety hazards until further notice.  
Panoramic views of Sol Duc Valley and Olympic Mountains including Mt. Olympus
Reconstructed lookout replica of the historic cupula lookout. Short path and ramp into the lookout may require assistance for some visitors with disabilities. No water or electricity. Small parking lot, vault toilet, and picnic table.
Located 7 miles from Snider Work Center on FS Road 3040-595 requires experienced back roads drivers and high clearance vehicles. Road is not suitable for passenger cars, trailers, motor homes, small pickups, or squeamish drivers. Hiking trails extend from lookout along ridge and down to Sol Duc River.

MORGAN'S CROSSING
Boat launch on the glacier fed Hoh River
Full Service Level: Vault toilets, riverboat ramp, and picnic area. Located approximately 5 miles up the Hoh Road. No fee. If fishing, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife requires a fishing stamp at this location.

MOUNT MULLER LOOP Trail #882
12.8 miles loop trail passes through the moss covered trees and ferns of the Sol Duc Valley and along the wildflower fields of Snider Ridge, with spectacular views from Mt. Muller. Requires NW Forest Pass
Conditions: Trail north has wash-out at beginning of trail.  Valley trail has some blow down> Expect crew repair activities along trail.  Higher elevation:  Expect some down material and snow.
Remarks: Panoramic views of Sol Duc Valley, Lake Crescent, and Olympic Mountains including Mt. Olympus. Lower end of trail: Easy. Higher elevation of trail: Moderate to difficult trail for horses, hikers, and bicycles. Expect fluctuating snow levels.

KLOSHE NANITCH Trail #882
3.5 miles from West Snider Road trailhead, near Klahowya Campground to Kloshe Nanitch Lookout. Requires NW Forest Pass
Conditions: Expect some down material and patchy snow.
Remarks: Trail open.   Lower end: Easy. From Milepost .5: More Difficult

BOGACHIEL RAIN FOREST TRAIL Trail #825
Options of a 3 mile loop trail in the Bogachiel Rain Forest or a 2 mile hike to the Park boundary that then extends over 31 miles deep into Olympic National Park, to Seven Lakes Basin and eventually the Sol Duc Hot Springs.
Conditions  OPEN.  Wetland Trail is being reconstructed and one area is muddy.
Remarks: Moderate trail travels through lush Bogachiel Rain Forest, part of the Pacific Northwest Trail system. The upper loop of the trail skirts around a unique wet land setting with opporutnities to see elk. 

PIONEER'S PATH Trail #884
0.3 mile Nature trail with interpretive signs. Trail begins inside of Klahowya Campground, beyond Site 45 across from the Overflow area.
Conditions:  OPEN
Remarks: Trail provides easy accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

PYRAMID PEAK Trail #886
7 miles Moderate trail accesses Olympic National Park with spectacular views overlooking the Straits of Juan de Fuca and Lake Crescent.
Conditions:   Most of the 2007 blowdown has been removed.

Remarks: The first six miles of trail is converted from road 3068, normally easy to bike or ride.   The last mile of trail is a moderate climb to the top of the ridge overlooking Lake Crescent. 

SNIDER-JACKSON TRAIL (RUGGED RIDGE) Trail #883
0.3 mile short trail to Olympic National Park boundary, then continues in the Park connecting to the Bogachiel Trail, eventually to Hoh Visitor Center.
Conditions: Maintained 2007.
Remarks: Rugged Ridge Trailhead on FSR 29 070 is open.

LITTLE RIVER Trail #889
0.5 miles Short trail to Olympic National Park boundary. Trail continues in the Park to a junction with the Hurricane Hill Lookout Trail.
Conditions: Last maintained 5/01. Snow, vehicles can drive to 1.4 miles below lower trailhead. Route finding difficulties after upper/lower trail junction.
Remarks:.Check avalanche conditions, carry 10 essentials, winter climbing skills and equipment necessary.

A Northwest Forest Pass is required year round for parking at some Forest Service Trailheads. See Special Notices below.

10 ESSENTIALS ARE NECESSARY! Map of area, compass, flashlight/with extra batteries, extra food, extra clothing, sunglasses, pocket knife, matches in waterproof container, candle or fire starter, first aid kit. Also, needed are good boots, good rain gear, a leak proof tent and wool or polypropylene clothes to stay warm and dry. Weather changes rapidly in the Olympic Mountains. Don't forget wool gloves, and a hat. Anytime can be Hypothermia Weather.

Information

SPECIAL NOTICES

NORTHWEST FOREST PASS: This Pass is good at selected USDA Forest Service sites throughout Washington and Oregon that meet that are part of the Recreation Enhancement Act (REA).  The Northwest Forest Pass is only needed on the Olympic National Forest when parking at designated REA trailheads.

The annual Northwest Forest Pass is $30.00 and the daily Northwest Forest Pass is $5.00. The annual pass will be valid for one year from the month of purchase. The passes are sold at all Forest Service offices, numerous retail outlets throughout the State, via the Internet, and by telephone.

Check the weather report before hiking and always be prepared for extremes from hot fire danger conditions to cold, wet weather. Expect some blow down or rock debris on roads and trails. Be prepared. Drive with caution: Contact the office for current road conditions. Some roads have washouts and there be downed trees or rocks on roadway.

SPECIAL FOREST PRODUCTS:  The next date for issuing Special Forest Products permits for evergreen foliage on the Pacific Ranger District is January 16.  There will be 25 permits issued by lottery if there are more than 25 people looking for permits.   If fewer than 25 people, permits will beissued on a First Come First Serve basis.   Firewood permits are available by mail through the Olympia office anytime.  Firewood permits are available at the Forks and Quinault offices when they can be scheduled around other workloads.
