Gulfport Campus
On August 29, 2005, the Mississippi Gulf Coast was enjoying the very best of times when a storm of monumental proportion turned her destructive fury towards the Mississippi coastline. As a result of Hurricane Katrina, we were forced to close the Gulfport Mississippi campus. The new Gulfport facility is scheduled to be completed in late 2010.
The 400-year old Graduation Oak that adorns our Gulfport grounds withstood the vicious winds and tidal surges. Today, it majestically stands as a powerful symbol of the heart and humanity of the Armed Forces Retirement Home.

Washington Campus
Modernizing the Washington Campus
Established in 1851, AFRH-Washington has seen many changes in two centuries. Built on farm land atop a hill overlooking the US Capitol, the Washington campus has been home to thousands of former enlisted military. The buildings include historic quarters and facilities and the large more modern residences built within the last 60 years - LaGarde, Scott, and Sheridan buildings.
To keep pace with changing needs in senior care, like complying with the American Disability Act requirements, much-needed renovations will make our entire facility more vibrant and functional. Major renovations will begin on the Scott building.
The Scott building, the oldest of three operational dormitories, accommodates resident and guest rooms as well as chaplain offices, dining services, the library, the wellness center which encompasses both medical, dental, and eye clinics and resident services.
The renovation is part of the AFRH Capital Improvement Plan and the initial request for $5 million plus funding for planning and construction management was submitted along with the 2009 annual budget for approval by the Department of Defense and the Office and Management and Budget, as well as the Congress and President. The follow-up request of $70 million for construction will be requested as part of the FY 2010 budget submission.
