GSA Center for Information Technology Accommodation March 2009 Assistive Technology Day

On March 31, 2009, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) will host an event in Washington, DC so participants can learn about a device that provides next-generation video relay services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. 24th Annual International Technology & Persons with Disabilities Conference

Digital TV (DTV) & People with Disabilities

Effective February 17, 2009, federal law requires that all full-power television broadcast stations broadcast only in digital format. Some consumers have expressed concern about how the converter boxes will work and whether they will continue to receive closed captions. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules require digital-to-analog converter boxes to either pass through available analog captions or generate their own digital captions if the programming is captioned. Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) 2008 Recipient of The Presidential Award for Management Excellence

The Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) has won The Presidential Award for Management Excellence - the President's Quality Award for 2008. CAP is a TRICARE Management Activity program that provides assistive technology to allow federal employees and military service members with disabilities to access electronic and information technology.

11th Annual Accessing Higher Ground Accessible Media, Web & Technology Conference

This conference took place November 11- 14, 2008 in Boulder, CO and focused on the implementation and benefits of Assistive Technology in the university and college setting for people with sensory, physical and learning disabilities. Other topics include legal and policy issues, including Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 compliance, and making campus media and information resources (including Web pages and library resources) accessible.

IDEAS 2008

The Interagency Disability Educational Awareness Showcase (IDEAS) is GSA's premier event focused on partnering industry and education with government to meet the requirements under Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. The 2008 event was held on November 14 in Arlington, VA.

Emerging Trends & People with Disabilities: Public Consultation

The National Council on Disability (NCD) is gathering public input for a study of emerging issues and trends affecting the lives of people with disabilities. Information gathered will be used in the development of NCD's next annual progress report to the President and Congress. The Council is seeking input on disability issues including health, housing, employment, insurance, transportation, assistive technology, recreation, emergency preparedness, early intervention and education. Suggestions should be sent to NCD by July 22, 2008 via email - type "Emerging Trends" in the subject line.
