New ACHP Course Offering
The ACHP announces a new one-day course designed to introduce participants to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and its review requirements for federal project planning.  Introduction to Section 106 provides an overview of the process while emphasizing key terms and concepts.  The training is scheduled for June 3 in Honolulu, HI.  Click here for registration and information.

Omnibus Public Land Management Act Becomes Law, Authorizes Facets of Preserve America and Save America’s Treasures
March 30, 2009—President Barack Obama signed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 today at the White House. The law includes the text of the Preserve America and Save America’s Treasures Act, formerly H.R. 3981/S.2262 in the previous 110th Congress, which permanently authorizes both programs. 

The Preserve America Program which involves the ACHP in a key coordinating role is defined in the law to include (1) the Preserve America grant program within the Department of the Interior; (2) the recognition programs administered by the ACHP; and (3) the related efforts of federal agencies, working in partnership with state, tribal, and local governments and the private sector, to support and promote the preservation of historic resources. Up to $25 million per year is also authorized to carry out the program (funds must be appropriated each year through the budget process). Click here to read the full story.

Hall Named Assistant Director
The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the appointment of Caroline D. Hall as the new Assistant Director for Federal Property Management in the Office of Federal Agency Programs – the office that deals primarily with the Section 106 process of the federal preservation program. She began work April 13, 2009. Read more.

ACHP Adopts Report of the Expert Panel
Expert panel Vice Chairman David Morgan (left) and Chairman Doug Wheeler address the council members February 20, 2009At its winter business meeting February 20, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation voted to endorse the recommendations contained in the report from the expert panel that was formed to study the future of the national historic preservation program. ACHP Gives Awards at Meeting
Winners of the Chairman's Award for Federal Achievement in Historic PreservationThe Advisory Council on Historic Preservation had its winter business meeting today and gave out two awards. BLM Nationwide Programmatic Agreement Addendum Signed
February 4, 2009 - The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has signed an addendum to the Bureau of Land Management’s nationwide Programmatic Agreement (PA) to improve the participation of Indian tribes in BLM’s Section 106 reviews. Read more here.
