Wastes subtopics Alphabetical List of All Topics

Storage facilities are places where waste is held until it can be treated or disposed of. EPA regulates both the management and the siting of waste storage facilities. Facility owners or managers must obey strict operating requirements, undergo regular inspections and ensure that emissions into the surrounding air, water and soil are restricted. Siting restrictions are based on the sensitivity of the local environment, for example, storage facilities are prohibited from areas prone to floods or earthquakes. EPA continues to develop improved design and operating standards that use a combination of different technologies and good operating practices for the storage of hazardous waste.
