Medical waste is generated by medical research and by the medical treatment of human beings and animals. Common medical wastes include soiled bandages, culture dishes, surgical gloves and instruments (including needles) as well as human tissue. Many aspects of medical waste disposal are handled at the state and local level. However, the EPA does work with local authorities as well as other federal agencies to regulate emissions for medical waste incinerators and issue stringent guidelines for pollutants released by these incinerators. The Agency also promotes alternative methods of medical waste disposal such as off-site commercial disposal or onsite disinfection technologies.
