in 1960 by Jacques Desmartis, Bergerac, France. Named, trademarked in France,
and intro. in 1973 by Desmartis & Cie. Name registered January 15, 1975.
[NOTE: In accordance with the 1995 International Code of Nomenclature for
Cultivated Plants, names that are trademarked are not valid cultivar names.
Therefore, the registration of the cultivar name KIMONO is rescinded
and the cultivar name DESKIM 082 is registered and approved as of January

KIOWA
(M.R. Pooler and R.L. Dix, HortSci. 34(2):361-363. 1999): Deciduous,
multistem tree that has obtained a height of 8.0 m and a spread of 7.5 m in
30 years. Bark exfoliates on sinuous trunks and older branches, exposing a
brilliant cinnamon brown trunk (Greyed orange 166B 3). Lvs. elliptical, dark
green (Green 137A), 7.5 to 10.5 cm long and 3.9 to 4.6 cm wide, and have yellow
(Yellow Orange 20A to Greyed Orange 163B) autumn color. White inflorescences
are terminal panicles 9 to 13.5 cm long and 8.5 to 14 cm wide, and appear in
late June or early July. Resistant to powdery mildew and hardiness is rated
at U.S.D.A. zone 7, possibly into zone 6. This plant orig. from a shipment
of nine cuttings of unnamed L. fauriei received from Dr. Y. Tachibana,
Botanical Garden of Osaka, City Univ., Osaka Prefecture, Japan, in 1968 (PI
326424). It was evaluated initially on the grounds of the U.S. National Arboretum
and selected by D.R. Egolf; intro. in 1994 by U.S. National Arboretum; NA 63419;
PI 583789. Name registered November 30, 1994.
