dawpa2000 8 months agoI'm excited!
I like the middle Vimeo Plus tag (the one with 4 circles) the best.
Second and third best are those two first ones with the squares and inscribed letters.
The Plus tag with the 4 L-shaped corners reminds me of the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) logo. :S
Also, the last Sneak Peek box isn't working. I get "404 - Not Found" on plus6.jpg. -
Ayz Waraich 8 months agoThat's sounds really promising. Can't wait.
HD pay per play? Will there be like a lump sum type option as well?
Exciting... -
Alex P. 8 months agoDo it live? Hmmm... didn't Bill O'Reilly say that?
-
Ted 8 months agoWill It Cost Money?
-
RCHeliResource.Com 8 months agoof course it will...lol "shopping cart" was a key word there buddy
-
Daniel Dides 6 months agoI think he meant will it be like a YouTube partnership, like, where Vimeo selects some key users and gives them a subscription, and offers them to people.
-
RCHeliResource.Com 8 months agoNice
-
Jeffrey Holland 8 months agoI can't wait to get vimeo plus! I'm willing to pay for such a great service, but the "hd pay per play" doesn't really tickle my fancy.
Channels 2.0 is looking good too. Keep up the great work guys! -
Annie 8 months agoWell!
I'm getting a bit concern about the money issue of this. The new vimeo plus sound great but I don't think members of the group are going to pay to see their mates new HD videos. Is there going to be a yearly fee for members and that will cancel out the HD pay per play???.
Although if people are paying to see our HD videos we will be making money:))) and than I can afford to buy a bigger and better new camera!!
Sounds fair enough now:)))
-
William Richardson 8 months agoFrom the post, it seems that only the newer features listed will be the ones you charge for yes? I'm probably going to end up getting "plus" either way, but I'm just wondering.
-
Blake Whitman 8 months agoyes, only the new features.
-
Mike Benner 8 months agoAny word on how much it will cost?
-
Paul Lips 8 months agoLove how easy it is.
Would like to embed as video-still, when mouseover it starts to auto-play, when click on the video it takes you to my own defined web page, no adds, no controls (only sound on/off). and the ability to put a picture/own logo on top of the video.
Okay?
Great work! -
babozor 8 months agoStill waiting for the price... but seems awesome
Had made a comparaison on video plateforms and Vimeo was first on all point travailleursduweb.com/2008/04/23/plateformes-videos-le-test-ultime.html
Just wait for the price and conditions, but seems really cool -
3d60 8 months agoyhea....er... cool gackphics
-
The Phil 8 months agoDefinitely needs a cheap price point, maybe even a special price for early adopters. But make it a low price and more people will get plus. I'd like to see a monthly price and then a specially priced yearly price. The best thing would be unlimited plus uploading (within reason).
I'd also like to see email contact credit tagging. Basically, any time you tag a person in your credits. it keeps their contact info in a known credits area and you can easily add them to credits in the future, anytime you add one of these saved contacts in your credits, it will send said contact an email letting them know they have been tagged in the credits. This would obviously be for letting people who are not vimeo members know about videos they are in and then in said email there could be a sign up link and/or just them coming to the site to view the content might get them to join Vimeo. -
Joseph H 8 months agoWill the price point be comparable to Flickr's? I'm looking for a long term, low cost solution(!) - not sharing them much and somewhere I can keep them backed up and viewable online.
-
Blake Whitman 8 months agothe price will be competitive, but obviously photos and videos are two very different things.
-
Joseph H 8 months agoAgreed. Of course Flickr supports video up to a point... albeit with that point being 90 seconds into your clip.
I can't see myself paying more than Flickr's current plan as my needs are fairly modest: I'd like to get about 8gb of private video online, and then add the odd video every three months or so for the next 2 years. In fact, aside from wanting to upload this back archive, your current service is actually great. Thanks!
Best luck finding the right price point(s) to satisfy your users' needs. -
Anthony Mirelli 8 months agoCool !
The only thing that bugs me is this : "more upload space"...
So it will not be unlimited (like flickr) ?
-
Ted Avery 8 months agoIf you look at the top-right screenshot one of the buttons says "Unlimited HD Uploads" so I would assume the limit is removed altogether.
-
William Dabiere 8 months agoI can't wait. Sell it to me now.

Loren Rogers 8 months agoBOOOOOOOOOOO!
my vote is a resounding NO. i can see where this will lead. soon features that we regular users come to love so much will be stripped away, only to be available for a monthly fee. please, keep vimeo free! my guess is that people will be turned away from the site if there is any kind of price tag. people have come to expect poor quality media from free sites. vimeo has done well by keeping adds to a min. and very high quality standards. if there is money to be made from this site, i mean big corporate money, than next thing you know it's "vimeo, a division of yahoo." what a load of crap that'll be.
please correct me if i'm wrong. input much appreciated!
lets keep vimeo a positive place for artists!
- loren -
Blake Whitman 7 months agoi wouldn't worry too much about this.
-
PEIKA 8 months agoCant wait!
-
Lylupus 8 months agoI think I'm interested in this, pending cost really. Vimeo has been a good discovery for me, and I'd like to support it beyond adds (which I filter). Only real question is this: " better quality videos," - this isn't a way to slightly lower the free package video quality to make that paid-for service look better is it? I doubt it, but I thought I'd ask!
-
Blake Whitman 7 months agobetter quality will mean just that, for Plus members we will allow for higher bit rate transcodes.
-
Alan Duff 7 months agoBut that also would mean that the persons watching the video will need to load that higher bit rate so if they have slower internet then it most likely will not help them much.
edit> but then against I guess they can turn of HD if they on a slow connection. -
Christopher Prouse 8 months agoSounds interesting... the only thing that concerns me is the "pay per play". I understand Vimeo puts ads next to our vids to help defer the cost of bandwidth and other expenses. But taking the ads away and making me pay doesn't give me much incentive to post links to my HD versions on facebook anymore, where hundreds of friends could watch them :S
Paying for enhanced options and then charging the Plus member when people use those options sounds a little counter intuitive. I really don't mind the ads on Vimeo, and I think members who purchase Plus should have the option to turn on Vimeo's ads to offset the "pay per play". Either that or let Plus members have the option to place their own Google Adsense code next to their HD videos to offset the bandwidth incurred by their vids. -
Christopher Prouse 8 months agoUpon further examination of the pic... looks like the "pay per play" is only for embedded vids? Which would be more appropriate, I just hope it's not too much ...seeing as how we'd already be paying for the service.
-
Lisa Kassner 7 months agoI would love to see a site where commercial or social justice content could be streamed in high def. An organization could send a url to an individual by email and when the person getting the email would click on the link see the video content stored. Many commercial and non profit websites would love to be able to stream high quality video on demand via their site.
For instance, I shoot a commercial of a new home on the real estate market. I do a walk through and feature the selling points of the home that is for sale.
For Instance: There is a union or special interest group that wants to deliver a high quality video presentation to individuals.
For instance: There is a manufacturer that wants to develop a product video and stream it from their website with the option of playing the video embedded or to stream in high def.
For instance: I am a new startup entertainment or technology magazine show and I want folks in the field want to send me their raw footage to be able to store what they shot in high def. My people log into the file server and download what a stringer uploads to the file server and edit it for use live, replay later, or to use in a presentation.
For instance: I have a new music show with new artists that want to feature their music or want to stream music videos of their new releases.
For instance: I want to develop new entertainment talent and have a place for individuals to stream their demo reels.
The need for such a commercial site for independent producers and new comers is endless...
I use my single click amazon.com account to pay for usage streamed.
I hope you folks are putting on your thinking caps... There is a tremendous opportunity for creative folks here to market their skills and get paid for them.
I can see where there is a need for Vimeo Plus and for Vimeo Plus Commercial!
Kindest and sincerest warm regards,
Lisa J. Kassner
Los Angels California -
Lisa Kassner 7 months agoI was to the iHollywwood Digital Media Summit recently. There was a presenter there that said, "the Music Industry was the canary in the coal mine. The music industry has gone the way of peer to peer, music downloads and subscription service. Film and television will be following soon."
A lot of emphasis was placed on social networking sites like YouTube, MySpace and search engines that are add based to pay the way.
If Vimeo.com could offer an add revenue sharing based on the amount of traffic with independent producers that produce quality product for a Vimeo.com Plus, a new business model perhaps could be developed.
I could indeed imagine many new independent commercial channels created by the efforts of vimeo.com and the folks creating new media product.
Kindest and sincerest warm regards,
Lisa J. Kassner -

dawpa2000 7 months ago"Vimeo Plus members will have better quality videos with higher bit rate transcodes."
How will this new feature affect old, previous video uploads? Are the videos re-transcoded automatically or will I be able to re-transcode them manually upon upgrading to Vimeo Plus? -
Blake Whitman 7 months agoonce you become a Plus member, the videos you upload from then on will be higher quality.
-
The Phil 7 months agoSo excited for Vimeo plus, I look back here way too often in hopes for updates and/or answers to questions. Watched pot syndrome, lmao.

Be Well ;-) 7 months agoI like the idea of higher bit rates per transcoding, will that also extend to supporting different fps like 25fps, 29.97fps as well as true HD 4:3?
I hope so, as this will offer a new dimension to videos here on vimeo :) -
Kay in t Veen 7 months agoThis is what i am waiting for!!!

Lisa Kassner 7 months agoI want to know if I can stream political information from this new Vimeo Plus as well as commercial material that will be linked to a web site embedded... This content does not have to be part of the Vimeo collection. I am paying for it... I hope you can make this so...

swruler9284 7 months agoplease, pleaase don't make this like the flickr pro service, where you need to have a pro account just to use the site regularly.
if the free service has the same features as the regular service now, that is fine. but anything less I think would be a step in the wrong direction -

-
Sebastian 7 months agoI'm really looking forward to hearing more about Vimeo plus. I'm a non-commercial user, just want to share family video privately, on our website, in HD. Definitely willing to pay for it.
The ability to have this video be 'unlisted' to the rest of Vimeo is an important feature. Even better, add some simple referer-based security options.
Also, the pay-for-play concept doesn't thrill me. I'd rather pay a flat rate, so I know what it it will cost. Or let me specify a cap, so I don't get nailed with a big bill if something happens beyond my control. -
Blake Whitman 7 months agoit will not be a pay-for-play system fyi. There will be packages that you can buy for HD embedding.
-
Sebastian 7 months agoCool, thanks for the reply, Blake.
-
Fabián Aguirre 7 months ago"it will not be a pay-for-play system fyi. There will be packages that you can buy for HD embedding."
I AM SOLD!!!!!! Thanks for this clarification, Blake! -
Dave Lankford 7 months agoQuestion: if you replace a video after signing up for Vimeo Plus, will it get encoded with the better Plus encoding profile?
Also, more info on the pay-per-play would be nice. I know many of us are a little hesitant about that. Flat monthly fees would be much more agreeable (even if their are frequency or bandwidth usage constraints). -
Blake Whitman 7 months agosee above. Not sure yet about the replace idea. we'll think about it.
-
Dave Lankford 6 months agoIf I only learned to read. For some reason I did not see the "it will not be a pay-for-play system." That's great. Well done and much appreciated.

-
Mike Paterson 7 months agooh no! the release date has moved back to September! Is it possible to at least post a complete list of features which will be included in the first release of plus? I'm working on a really great project which will need embedded video and I'd love to use vimeo plus for it, but as we're building the site now I need to know now what plus will offer so that I can optimise the design around it.
-
Matt 7 months agoCan't wait for this, I will be one happy person Sept 08. Quick question though, will Hubnut be able to support HD as well?
-
Cody Smith 6 months agoupdate the status on this beezy!
-
Rahn 6 months agoI second the comment for replacing for higher quality encoding. It seems redundant to have to re-make the whole video profile to get Plus quality.
With higher quality videos will the streaming speed be significantly affected? Also, on top of custom embed options, will we get more custom options for the vimeo pages as well?
-
Matt 6 months agoI don't know the Vimeo system exactly, but replacing old video to get a higher quality just can't happen. Vimeo would have to be down for months in order to re-encode the old videos into the higher bit-rate. It would basically be like re-uploading all your videos again (except without the uploading part). I may not know the Vimeo framework exactly, but I know that doing something like this could not occur practically, at least not without taking down a server or 20. Best bet as I'm sure Blake or Andrew would tell you is to re-upload the videos yourself, most likely using the replace feature, to achieve the higher bit-rate quality. From my experience this is just not technically possible for all those videos to automatically be re-encoding in a background process. But hey, if I'm wrong, well then Vimeo is just even cooler than we all thought.
-
Rahn 6 months agoHey Matt,
I was commenting on another comment above that asked/suggested using the "replace" function after getting the Plus to re-encode for higher quality. I agree with you that it's not practical to expect this automatically and I don't expect that to happen. I meant to say that I would like to replace the video by uploading again to the same video profile instead of deleting the whole entry and re-uploading as well as re-entering description, re-tagging, re-crediting etc etc. Blake's reply above had said that he's not sure about the replace idea, and I'd guessed that meant that the it hadn't been in the vision for Plus to be able to replace and upload. -
Matt 6 months agoHey Rahn,
Ah didn't see that. Well in that case I agree, using the replace feature to upgrade them would be nice, I hope that does develop out. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. -
Christopher Prouse 6 months agoLooking forward to it guys... whenabouts in September will we likely see it? A teaser/ preview, or an encoding comparison would be nice! I'm hoping the higher quality encoding will be enough to get rid of the choppiness in panning shots.

Matt 6 months agohahaha, I'd love to pay them money as well. Let's all do it together, we can take pictures and have cake.
-
Matt 6 months agoJust another comment here because I see something interesting in these pictures above. When you say "outro", am I to understand we will be able to embed videos and the use other Vimeo videos to act as like a "lead out" clip? So rather than uploading a video with my lead out animation, I can just upload the lead animation as a separate file and the embed will play it all together as if one video? Intro clips as well?
-
Blake Whitman 6 months agooutro will only be for images/text/etc, not video... perhaps in further versions.

Michael Lander 5 months agoWhile I understand that the RYGB plus thing is probably trying to say that the Plus version is more feature packed than regular Vimeo... it's so ... Microsoft. I'm not against Microsoft, but the whole RYGB thing is kinda cliche. I think the rounded plus outline thing in the green the same colour as that Feature Requests green bar over to the right would look rather fetching.

Whee.
– Released! 3 Channels 2.0
Synopsis
Channels 2.0 will be a much more functional and easier way to showcase Videos. We're stripping channels down from its current incarnation to give it a slick new look and we will be providing multiple views that users can choose to display their channel in. With the creation of Groups, Channels 2.0 will become more of an entertainment destination as Groups takes over the roles of community building around certain themes.
Status Update
The team has come to a consensus regarding the new feature set for Channels 2.0. Jack has handed off his designs and Kevin is now rocking out the code. Take a look at the sneak peak pics for a little taste of what's to come!

Ted 8 months agoCool.
-
Rob Bond 8 months agoI like Vimeo, but the current Channels feature lacks an effective means to browse video content and hence is holding me back from uploading any additional content.
I truly hope Channels v2.0 will include a means to browse channel content by tags or by associating a "group" with video content. For example, Stage6 allowed channel video content to be associated with "groups" (thematic categorize) and then display channel content by groups.
I have a great deal of live concert recordings that I would like to allow subscribers to browser by group (such as "acoustic", "ballads", "rarities", "musical theater", etc.). If you have not already, please consider this need in developing Channels v2.0 features.
Thanks! -
Kyle 8 months agoI would love for that to be a part of Channels as well, as it would help to filter videos by contributor if we can tag or group the videos by our names. The previews here look really awesome, keep up the good work!
-
Julian S. 8 months agoAlso something to keep in mind and maybe consider would be some type of monetization for the channel/forum/group creators. Maybe the ability for adding Google Adsense to certain pages or users' home pages? This could create an incentive to regularly maintain and update fresh content and maybe making a bit of dough to support this expensive hobby. Or a revenue sharing type of solution with Vimeo?
-
Sebas van den Brink 7 months agoI cannot wait to improve on my little XSELLN's channel and make it a better place. Save the panda's and always wipe your eraserfragments from your drawings - never blow!

Bryce 6 months agoI really like video sites and I hope to one day have a site somewhat like this with high quality user created videos. Vimeo is great! On to the topic. Channels should be allowed to one time purchase/rent a video from another user to show it on his/her channel for 24 hrs. This would allow channels to build content with stuff users would have to usually buy from users. The idea is much deeper then that but it is in that general direction. Hope to see some real channel abilities on here. With Quality videos there needs to some way to have quality channels. - Keeping changing the game!
-
Bryce 6 months agoWow - I really should have proof read. Oh, well I never was one for writing. Correction: With quality videos their needs to be quality channels that people want to interact with and use. - Keep changing the game!

Synopsis
Groups will function as mini communities on Vimeo. You'll be able to create groups, invite users, share videos, and connect with people around the idea of that group. Basically Groups will start where Channels left off: more usability, great new features, and better control over everything.
Status Update

George Psinakis Rausch 9 months agoI'm glad to hear that groups are coming online. Can you make the option available to sort groups by region as well? It would be really helpful to know if users are in major cities through the US and the World that way you can find other individuals to work with. I'm saying this because, for example, a dozen or more groups might spring up within New York City, whereas if there was a "New York City" region in which one could make a group, that would be really solid. It would get rid of excess confusion.
Hopefully there will also be group only talk boards so specific questions can remain within the group... -
H. Paul Moon 8 months agoI really like what you've done, but there's one missing feature you're well aware of that essentially makes the entire new Groups feature crippled. No HTML.
People have been asking about this for over a year, in numerous posts. It is the one single Achille's heel for this site. Simply put, if you don't allow hyperlinks and images in your new Groups and their Forums, they have no chance of becoming the robust community that you envision. In other words, your business model is dead on arrival. Please pass that along to your decision-makers. No one else in the text/video blogging marketplace is shying from empowering users to employ HTML (hyperlinks with short text, text formatting, images) -- the core Web language -- so you are standing apart in the most self-destructive manner.
If it's a problem of hiring people who know how to integrate these features safely, then I'd encourage you to start the job search for talented staff before your business model fails. I really do think that the security issues you regularly cite to have been worked through by talented programmers on the billions of Web sites that facilitate user-generated HTML functionality.

So... hmm, the HD button on the embedded player, eh... does this mean Vimeo is making the jump the HD outside of the site? Love what I see - keep up the great work! -
Paul McClintock 11 months agoI think it'll just inform you that you can also watch it in HD if you follow the link back to the vimeo page.
-

Jarques 11 months agoThis looks great. Especially integrating HD into embedded players will help with some podcasters or screen-casters. Can't wait!
Will the updated player also be on Vimeo itself? -
Soxiam 11 months agoright now we think this is a refresh only for our embed player but some of the design elements might trickle down to the on-site player as well.

Allex Radu 11 months agoCOOL! I wanted embeddable HD sins i start uploading videos to vimeo. Then i was disappointed that i can't embed HD, I thought had to do something with bandwidth, but if you do that i hope you will not lower our weekly quota because we using too much bandwidth.

Josh K2 10 months agoGreat work! Looking forward to it. Especially that it makes "We HAVE HD" more apparent to the user. I was sooo pissed when Stage6 shut down.. I really cant stand the quality of f.YouTube (and all other clones) and was so happy when I found vimeo.. I know a lot of people would agree with me on how superior Vimeo is if they just knew that there IS better quality than youtube available.. Now they will know!

Simon Tarr 9 months agomuch better, esp with the indication of HD in the embedded player. Still not sure I grasp the reasoning behind not allowing it embedded vids. I mean, it's not like there isn't a Vimeo bug inthe corner and a ginormous Vimeo branded loader. Folks WILL know where the HD videos are coming from.

Mikee 11 months agoIt may be usefull to add near every video title the size in minutes and the resolution, that is in the search result. It may save time in deciding if you want to open a specific video or not.
-
Soxiam 11 months agojust so you know, you can switch to video mode in the search results page. that way you don't have to open another page to play the video.
-
chriskalani 11 months agoI love the idea of it coming up from the white opposed to being at the top like it is now. I like the reorganization and the search a lot too. Very nice Sox. I see it has partially been integrated. The avatar is still the same. Is this sorta like a soft launch or what? I am loving it though, really sexy.

Josh K2 10 months agoWhile we're on the subject, could you get it working on Opera? (When I try to use it in Opera, the drop down appears under the Vimeo logo in the top left of the page)
Not that big of a deal right now as FireFox is my main browser but once Opera 9.5 gets released I'm gonna be making the switch (aside from just a better feature set it is hands down, MUCH faster than IE6,7,8 and FF2). -

I am one that is getting plus even if it had no features, just to pay Vimeo for it awesomeness... so, this unicorn thing is a plus plus hehehe
thinking about it...
I gonna need more love and comments, so I can monitor them :)
Why just limit yourself to UIs for computers? They'll be such a small percentage of the platforms for video in a few years time.
That means Vimeo's stats will be even better. I suppose they'll be community based as well. Stats based on people supporting each other's artistic expression. I think that's what Vimeo is about... right?
As a Vimeo Plus member, I can't wait for the stats !
Does it exist a beta version ? I'll be happy to test it asap.
Thanks for everything, Vimeo is the best.
Thanks,
Bill Barrere
I'd like a way to mark users or private messages as spam - I've had a couple so far, it seems someone has found a way to send automated rubbish to many people, perhaps even create accounts automatically.
