Welcome to the Virtual Herbarium
Here is where you can find pictures and descriptions of the flora that grows around the New London, N.H., area. In order to make it easy to find what you are looking for, the flora has been divided into categories as follows:
Angiosperms
These are leafy trees and shrubs.
Gymnosperms
These are trees and shrubs with needles or scales rather than leaves.
Spring Wildflowers
These are flowers found in the wild (although some may have escaped from cultivation at some point). They flower in the spring, and some may retain their bloom into the summer.
Summer Wildflowers
These are flowers found in the wild (again, some may have escaped from cultivation at some point). They flower in the summer, and some may retain their bloom into the fall.
Fall Wildflowers
These are wildflowers that are in bloom during the fall season. Students in the ENV301 class helped put these flowers on the site in the fall of 2001.
Ferns - These are a few of the ferns growing in the New London Area. ENV301 students added these to the site in the fall of 2001.
Grasses - These are a few of the grasses, mostly of the wetland variety, that can be found here. ENV301 students added these to the site in the fall of 2001.
New London Invasive Species - Learn more about how to identify and control invasive species. Also, view the results of New London's 2003 Invasive Species Town Survey.
Desert Herbarium - This link will take you to a desert herbarium we are building in conjunction with our field studies course, Desert Communities. Here you will learn about species that live in the Sonoran and Mohave Deserts of Arizona and California.
This site was developed by Laura Alexander, assistant professor in the Environmental Studies and Natural Sciences programs, to be used by the Colby-Sawyer and greater New London community.
In the fall of 2001, students in the ENV301 class added plants to this site as part of the requirements for their third year project. Since they were learning about wetlands in the class, most of their contributions have been in the area of wetland flora.
Photographs were taken by Laura and ENV students with digital cameras; both Nikon and Kodak models. All of the pictures were taken within New London, unless otherwise noted.
