2008 Colby-Sawyer Women's Volleyball Season Recap

The 2008 Women's Volleyball team continued to prove that they are one of the top programs in the region, after another impressive season. The 2008 season marked the team's sixth straight year with at least 20 wins and their third straight ECAC title match appearance. Colby-Sawyer went on to compile a 24-13 record, including 8-2 within the conference, under Coach George Martin who returned to the sideline after Coach Chad Braegelmann resigned shortly before the season began.

Third Seed Plymouth State Upsets Top Seeded Colby-Sawyer, 3-1 to Win 2008 III Division New England Volleyball ECAC Championship

NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 15, 2008 – The No. 3 seeded Plymouth State Panthers won the 2008 ECAC Division III New England Volleyball Championship by defeating top seeded Colby-Sawyer, 19-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19. Panthers senior Sarah Spears (Meredith, N.H.) was named the Most Outstanding Player by registering a total of 44 digs in two matches.

Chargers Advance to ECAC Championship at 5:00 p.m.

NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 15, 2008 – The No. 1 seeded Colby-Sawyer Chargers advanced to the 2008 ECAC Championship game after a straight set sweep over No. 4 University of New England. The Chargers will face the winner of the other semifinals matchup between No. 2 Johnson & Wales and No. 3 Plymouth State at 5:00 p.m., for the championship.

Michelle Doody Acknowledged by AVCA

LEXINGTON, Ky. - November 13, 2008 - The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its 2008 All-Region selections, on Thursday afternoon. Colby-Sawyer sophomore, Michelle Doody (Franklin, Mass.), was selected to the All-New England Honorable Mention team.

Chargers Host TCCC Foe Univ. of New England in ECAC Semifinal

NEW LONDON, N.H. - November 13, 2008 - After the quarterfinal round of the 2008 ECAC Women's Volleyball Championship, all of the top seeds advanced to the semifinal round on Saturday, November 15 beginning at noon. The No. 1 seed Chargers will play the No. 4 seed Univ. of New England at noon, while the other semifinal match at 2:00 p.m. includes No. 2 seed Johnson & Wales versus No. 3 seed Plymouth State. The semifinal round will be followed with the championship match at 5:00 p.m. All matches will take place in the Hogan Sports Center.

Chargers Earn No.1 Seed in Upcoming ECAC Tournament

CENTERVILLE, Mass. - November 11, 2008 - After finishing the regular-season with a 23-12 record, Colby-Sawyer was selected as the number one seed in the 2008 ECAC Division III New England Volleyball Championship. The tournament is an eight-team field with quarterfinal, semifinal and championship rounds.

Nicole Duarte Named TCCC Rookie of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - November 10, 2008 - Colby-Sawyer College freshman middle hitter Nicole Duarte (Windham, N.H.) enjoyed a sensational TCCC Championship week, averaging 4.11 kills per set as the Chargers earned a spot in the TCCC finals. She posted double-digit kills in all three matches, while hitting .600 or better in two contests.

Taylor Forsberg and Kristen Romanko Invited to NEWVA Senior Classic

BRISTOL, R.I.– November 9, 2008 – Seniors Taylor Forsberg (Moultonborough, N.H.) and Kristen Romanko (Mansfield, Mass.) have been invited to participate in the 2008 NEWVA Senior Classic, announced by the New England Women's Volleyball Association. The top 32 Division III senior women's volleyball players receive an invitation to this annual event that takes place on November 16, at Wellesley College.

Endicott Defeats Chargers, 3-0 in TCCC Finals

BEVERLY, Mass. – November 8, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team fell to the Gulls of Endicott, 3-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship game, on Saturday evening. The Gulls won the match by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 26-24. These two teams met a season ago in the finals with Endicott picking up a 3-2 win. The Chargers await an appointment to the ECAC tournament.

NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 6, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers are headed to the TCCC Championship game, where they will face the Gulls of Endicott, after an impressive 3-0 sweep of No. 6 Western New England, on Thursday night.

NEW LONDON, N.H. - November 4, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over No. 7 seed Salve Regina in TCCC Quarterfinal action on, Tuesday evening. This marks the second straight year the Chargers have ousted the Seahawks in the TCCC Quarterfinals. The Chargers will host No. 6 seed Western New England, on Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. The No. 2 seed Chargers rode the momentum of the largest home crowd of the season, winning in straight sets 25-12, 25-13, 25-18.

Michelle Doody and Nicole Duarte Lead a Cast of Chargers Honored With TCCC All-Conference Awards

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – November 4, 2008 – On Tuesday, November 4, The Commonwealth Coast Conference announced that Colby-Sawyer sophomore, Michelle Doody (Franklin, Mass.), has been named the Player of the Year. Freshman Nicole Duarte (Windham, N.H.) was named TCCC Rookie of the Year, marking the fourth time in the past seven seasons that a Charger has won this award. Senior Taylor Forsberg (Moultonborough, N.H.) has been named The Commonwealth Coast Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Junior Genny Moore (Centerville, Mass.) and senior Kristen Romanko (Mansfield, Mass.) also earned all-conference awards.

Chargers Sweep Regis, 3-0; Earn 2nd Seed in TCCC Tournament

WESTON, Mass. - November 1, 2008 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team finished the regular season with a 3-0 victory over Regis (25-21, 25-18, 25-14), on Saturday. The Chargers enter postseason play with an overall record of 21-11 and a TCCC record of 8-2. Colby-Sawyer earned the second seed in the tournament and will host the seventh seeded Salve Regina on Tuesday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hogan Sports Center.

Keene State Defeats Colby-Sawyer, 3-1

KEENE, N.H. - October 28, 2008 - The Colby-Sawyer volleyball team was defeated, 3-1 by Keene State in a battle of regionally ranked teams, on Tuesday evening.

Chargers Split a Pair of Matches on Senior Day

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 25, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball split a pair of matches on Saturday, October 25. In the first match of the afternoon, the Chargers were defeated 3-0 by Bates, with scores of 25-20, 25-13, and 25-21. In the night cap, as Colby-Sawyer celebrated senior day, they picked up a 3-0 win over Plattsburgh State, with scores of 25-12, 25-19, and 25-18. In between both matches, Bates earned a 3-1 victory over Plattsburgh State with scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-27, and 25-13.

Chargers' Seven Match Win Streak Halted By Endicott, 3-0

NEW LONDON, N.H. - October 22, 2008 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team had their seven match win streak snapped at the hands of Endicott, on Wednesday evening. The Gulls prevailed in a 3-0 victory by the scores of 25-17, 28-26, and 25-16. The win keeps Endicott undefeated in conference play at 8-0, while the loss drops Colby-Sawyer to 7-2 in TCCC play.

Chargers Defeat Coast Guard, 3-0 and Eastern Connecticut, 3-2

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - October 18, 2008 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team picked up two wins on Saturday pushing its winning streak to seven. The Chargers defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (10-12), 3-0 by scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-16. Colby-Sawyer then defeated Eastern Conn. (16-10), 3-2 by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 16-25, 25-15, and 15-12.

Chargers Win Fifth Straight; Sweep Johnson & Wales, 3-0

NEW LONDON, N.H. - October 16, 2008 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team swept Johnson & Wales, 3-0 on Thursday evening, by the scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-21. The Chargers push their winning streak to five and improve their overall record to 17-8. The Wildcats drop to 16-11 on the season.

Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight; Serves UNE First Conference Loss

NEW LONDON, N.H. - October 14, 2008 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team defeated the University of New England, 3-0 on Tuesday evening by the scores of 25-19, 26-24, and 25-22. The Chargers have won four straight and improve their overall record to 16-8 and conference record to 7-1. The Nor'easters suffer their first conference loss and drop to 6-1, with an overall record of 12-12.

Chargers take down Middlebury in five set thriller

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 10, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team defeated the ninth ranked team in New England, Middlebury, 3-2 on Friday, October 10 to kick off family and alumni weekend. The Chargers defeated Middlebury by the scores of 25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 11-25, and 15-13. With the win, the Chargers improve to 15-8. Middlebury dips to .500 with a record of 7-7.

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College women's volleyball team fell to Colby-Sawyer College, 3-0, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at the Fuller Activities Center on Wednesday night.

Chargers Earn Another Two-Match Split As They Complete Play at the Tufts Invitational - Genny Moore Named to the All-Tournament Team

MEDFORD, Mass. - October 4, 2008 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team earned another split on day two at the Tufts Invitational. The Chargers were defeated in their first match, 3-1 by Wellesley, 31-29, 25-14, 21-25 and 25-20. Colby-Sawyer registered a 3-0 victory over PolyTechnic, 3-0 who had to forfeit midway through the first set due to an injury.

Chargers Earn A Two-Match Split on Day 1 of Tufts Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. - October 3, 2008 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on day one at the Tufts Invitational. The Chargers were defeated in their first match of the night by Union, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-20. Colby-Sawyer earned a 3-0 victory over MIT, 25-23, 25-17, and 25-22. Both matches were played at MIT on Friday night.

Chargers Win Third Straight With 3-1 Defeat of Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. – September 30, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team won their third straight match with a 3-1 victory over Wentworth on Tuesday, September 30. The Chargers defeated Wentworth by the scores of 25-8, 25-27, 25-14, and 25-16. With the win, the Chargers improve to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in TCCC action. Wentworth drops to 2-10 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Nicole Duarte and Mary Francis Earn TCCC Accolades

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – September 29, 2008 – Junior Mary Francis (North Steuben, Maine) has been named TCCC Women's Tennis Player of the Week and freshman Nicole Duarte (Windham, N.H.) has been named TCCC Volleyball Rookie of the Week. The women's tennis and volleyball teams combined for an impressive 5-1 record last week.

Chargers Win Two At Home Against Eastern Nazarene and Salve Regina

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 27, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball won both of their matches on Saturday, September 27 at the Hogan Sports Center pushing their record to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the TCCC. The Chargers defeated Eastern Nazarene, 3-0 by scores of 25-2, 25-10, 25-19. Colby-Sawyer ended the day with a come from behind victory over Salve Regina, 3-2 by scores of 25-11, 23-25, 22-5, 25-18, 15-6.

Women's Volleyball Suffers First TCCC Loss; Gordon Beats Chargers, 3-2

WENHAM, Mass. – September 24, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer Chargers women's volleyball team suffered its first TCCC loss of the season and snapped an eight game winning streak with a 3-2 loss to Gordon on Wednesday evening. Gordon won by scores of 19-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-17, 15-6. The Chargers are now 8-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Women's Volleyball Sweeps Cabrini and Washington College on Day 1 of Baruch Invitational

Women's Volleyball Rallies From Two Sets Down To Defeat Plymouth State, 3-2

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – September 16, 2008 - Colby-Sawyer College rallied from two sets down to pull out a 3-2 victory over Plymouth State University Tuesday evening in a thrilling non-conference women's volleyball match at Foley Gymnasium. The win is the fourth straight for the Chargers, improving their record to 4-5.

Kristen Romanko Named TCCC Volleyball Player of the Week.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – September 15, 2008 – Senior Kristen Romanko (Mansfield, Mass.) has been named TCCC Volleyball Player of the week for her performance during three matches last week. The volleyball team went a perfect 3-0 with wins over conference opponents, Western New England and Roger Williams, as well as defending Great Northeast Athletic Conference champion, Rivier. BRISTOL, R.I. - September 13, 2008 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team picked up two more wins on Saturday, September 13 defeating Western New England, 3-1 and Roger Williams, 3-0. The two wins give the Chargers three straight victories and a 2-0 start in TCCC action.

Colby-Sawyer Women's Volleyball Wins Home Opener Over Rivier, 3-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 11, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team defeated Rivier, 3-1 on Thursday evening picking up their first win of the season. The Chargers won the match with scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-15, and 25-15. The win marks the fifth straight victory in a home opener for the Chargers. Rivier drops to 5-4 on the season while Colby-Sawyer improves to 1-5.

Chargers Volleyball pushes Division II Stonehill to the limit, but drops 5-set thriller, 3-2

EASTON, Mass. – September 4, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team dropped a heart breaker to Division II foe Stonehill, 3-2. The Skyhawks defeated the Chargers by the scores of 22-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-14, and 15-12. Stonehill is a member of the Northeast-10 Conference.

Chargers Volleyball Wraps Up Play at the 2008 Molten Pikes Peak Challenge

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – August 30, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team wrapped up its round robin play at the 2008 Molten Pikes Peak Challenge on Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Chargers dropped their first match 0-3 to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with scores of 19-25, 18-25, and 22-25. Tournament host Colorado College nipped Colby-Sawyer in the Chargers' final match, 1-3 by scores of 15-25, 25-23, 18-25, and 10-25.

Chargers Volleyball Drop Season Opener, 3-0 to #15 Wisc-Oshkosh.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – August 29, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team drop both of their matches on Friday night at the Colorado College Tournament. The Chargers fell to #15 Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 3-0 by the scores of 18-25, 18-25, and 18-25. Colby-Sawyer then fell to the College of St. Catherine, 3-0 with scores of 22-25, 15-25, and 13-25.

Women's Volleyball Picked 2nd in Preason Poll, Opens Season Friday

NEW LONDON, N.H. - August 27, 2008 - The Colby-Sawyer Women's Volleyball team has been selected to finish second in The Commonwealth Coast Conference this season, according to the 2008 TCCC Preseason Poll released on August 27. The Chargers received 112 points and three first place votes which ranked them just behind Endicott who received 117 points and eight first place votes.
