caBIG™ Recognition Awards : Opening remarks were delivered by NCI Deputy Director Dr. Anna Barker and NCI Director Dr. John Niederhuber. Dr. Kenneth Buetow, NCI Associate Director for Bioinformatics and Information Technology, was joined by Dr. Niederhuber in awarding the 2007 caBIG™ Recognition Award winners.
Plenary Session I : John Loonsk, M.D., Director of Interoperability and Standards, Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, delivered remarks about the need for interoperability standards throughout healthcare IT.
Kenneth H. Buetow, Ph.D., Associate Director for Bioinformatics and Information Technology, National Cancer Institute, provided a brief retrospective on the success of the caBIG™ pilot, illustrated the role caBIG™ technology plays in molecular medicine and previewed the future of the initiative.
Plenary Session II : Mark Boguski, M.D., Ph.D., Vice President and Global Head of Genome and Proteome Sciences, Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research spoke about the inherent complexity of molecular analysis and systems biology, noting the need for information technology to better manage the outputs of these sciences.
Plenary Session III Part I : Peter Covitz, Ph.D., Chief Operating Officer, NCI Center for Bioinformatics provided a detail review of the enormous technical achievements of the caBIG™ pilot and a look at key software applications and the caGrid infrastructure. Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni, Director, National Institutes of Health, spoke about caBIG™ as a model for other disease research areas as the era of precision medicine arrives, in which treatments are predictive, personalized, and preemptive.
