The
Fusion Energy Sciences Program includes a diverse
set of disciplines - from modern plasma physics
theories dealing with chaotic systems of energetic
particles and waves to more conventional
engineering problems of applied electromagnetism.
Throughout the scientific programs supported by
this office, there is a conscious recognition of
the importance of:
While there are several programs specifically
supported by the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences
for the purpose of science education, all of the
efforts within the fusion program are highly
dependent on voluntary efforts by personnel across
the program. These scientists, engineers, and
technical support staff give lectures, conduct
tours, develop displays, and otherwise contribute
their time and energy to this purpose.

Fusion
Teacher Research Academy, TRA: The
Fusion TRA (a partnership between LLNL and UC
Davis) is a professional development program for
middle and high school science teachers with
four Levels of increasingly more research
oriented workshops. The workshops are
designed to give teachers
experience in
promoting and conducting research with their
students using real-life fusion and astrophysics
examples of plasma spectroscopy. Spectroscopy is
important in a wide variety of fields such as
fusion science, astrophysics, and atomic
physics; and has been the cornerstone of many
physics discoveries of the past.

The Wonders of
