On entend souvent parler des troubles qui ont eu lieu avant, pendant ou après des élections dans divers pays du monde. Une des caractéristiques importantes de la démocratie aux États-Unis est la passation périodique et ordonnée des pouvoirs d'un président à l'autre. Les Américains savent quand la prochaine élection présidentielle aura lieu (le mardi suivant le premier lundi du mois de novembre tous les quatre ans) et que le pouvoir sera transmis le 20 janvier de l'année suivante au président qui vient d'être élu ou réélu.
