PCEI’s “Special Places” and Rose Creek Are a Great
Way to Relax and Enjoy Nature Article Written by Stephen
Pontius, WSU
If you are looking for a place to go relax and enjoy nature, PCEI’s
special places is a great way to start. In addition, it is an
excellent way to see the amazing work PCEI has done for these Reserves
and our surroundings. PCEI’s special places include Rose Creek, Magpie
Forest, Smoot Hill, Moscow Mountain Cedars, Idler’s Rest and PCEI’s
stream restoration sites. The Rose Creek Preserve is a park consisting
of twelve acres and has an abundance of many different types of animals
ranging from birds to white-tailed deer. It is known that there is
over one hundred different species of birds living in the area so if
you enjoy bird watching, this could very well be the perfect place for
you. During the spring months, the grassy hills are covered with many
of Eastern Washington’s wildflowers including buttercups, yellow fells
and wild geraniums. The conservancy chose to preserve Rose Creek due
to the fact that it is considered by many, to be one of the best
remaining examples of the rare cow parsnip community. Many people in
the Palouse region share a vested interest in preserving such a
territory because prior to grazing and farming, the community covered
less than five percent of today’s Whitman County. If you decide to
take an adventure and see just how magnificent Rose Creek truly is, it
has been asked of you to stay on the marked trails beginning with the
small parking lot and refrain from bringing any pets. For directions
and more information to PCEI's Spcial Place's, explore the
