Directions to Smoot Hill Sights: Klemgard County Park (picnic area, water, nature trails),

Road Conditions: 3/4 mile gravel
Mileage: 28 miles
Start at intersection of Stadium Way and N. Grand Ave. (N. end of
town). Head N. on SR 27 for 1 mile to the Albion turnoff. Head W. on
Albion Road (county 5500) for 6 miles to Albion. Take the first left in
town, staying on county road 5500 for 1 mile. This turns into county
road 5400 for 2 miles and then into county road. Stay on 5640 for 1
mile ending up at US 195. Then cross the highway onto Hamilton Hill
Road (county 8300). After 3 miles, turn right on gravel road (county
8250) to Klemgard Park. Return to junction with county 8300, turn right
(S) for 2 miles. Turn left at the "T" junction, following county road
8420; This turns into county 8440 after 1 mile. Continue for another 4
miles to "T" junction then turn left following county 9010 for 5 miles
back to Pullman.

Smoot Hill This 730 acre farm, located 12 miles from the Pullman campus, was
purchased by the WSU in 1972 for research and educational use. Over 300
acres of this property are in the Conservation Reserve Program because
it one of the largest intact remnants of the native Palouse plant
community. Smoot Hill's natural diversity and beauty make it popular
for ecology and botany field trips.
Facilities on site include lab buildings, barns and an animal
barn/kennel. In past years, elk, moose and woodland caribou were kept
on site during research projects. Smoot Hill has supported a wide range
of research projects, including: nutritional studies of moose,
population studies of mice and voles, studies of non-native plants,
genetics of salamanders, and wind deposition of dust and soil across
the Palouse farmlands.

Plants of Smoot Hill The Smoot Hill Reserve, located north of Pullman, is maintained by the
Department of Botany, Washington State University, as a remnant of
natural Palouse vegetation. Learn about the
