the understanding of the behavior of liquids and gases in motion as
related to needs in aeronautics.
+ American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Fellow.
Dr. James Heidmann (GRC) for his 20 years of research and technical
leadership in the areas of turbomachinery and heat transfer. Dr.
Heidmann leads aerothermodynamics research in the Fundamental
Aeronautics Program's Subsonic Fixed Wing Project.
+ Aviation Week & Space Technology Aeronautics/Propulsion Laureate Award.
Awarded to the Quiet Spike NASA/Gulfstream flight test team for
demonstrating the operability and performance of an extendable boom at
speeds up to Mach 1.8, which could eventually enable a new generation of
supersonic business jets. In 2006, a NASA Boeing F-15B was used to
flight test the nose-boom designed to break up the initial shock of
traditional sonic N-waves into a series of very weak shocks. NASA team
members include NASA Quiet Spike Flight Test Pilot James Smolka (DFRC)
and Flight Test Operations Engineer Leslie Molzahn (DFRC), who work for
the Supersonics Project of ARMD's Fundamental Aeronautics Program.
+ National Aeronautic Association (NAA) Robert J. Collier Trophy.
Awarded to researchers at NASA's Ames Research Center and NASA's Langley
Research Center for their contributions to a team of public and private
sector groups that conceptualized, developed, and oversaw initial
implementation of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B),
the next generation performance-based air-ground, ground-air, and
air-air surveillance system.
