Saving Our Seed : Working
with Southeast Farmers and Extension Agents in the Production of Organic
and Heirloom Seed |
Long Island Seed Project:
Long Island Seed is working to produce farm-bred seed
ecologically on Eastern Long Island, NY as part of a network of breeders,
farmers and gardeners.
They have an extensive seed list of vegetable seed and segregating populations
that growers can get - to do their own breeding and selection. Check out
their website www.liseed.org or contact
Ken Ettlinger directly at ken@liseed.org |

Soybean
Rust: Impacts on Organic Production Systems
- update: Limited
source areas of infected plants (kudzu and volunteer soybeans)
in Florida and southwestern Georgia, and wind patterns that previously
blocked the northerly flow of air from these infected areas are
believed to have reduced the early spread of soybean rust in the
U.S. this spring. Scientists are keeping an eye on tropical storm
Arlene, which may hit the Alabama coast this weekend, to see if
that will affect the movement of soybean rust spores into new areas.
Scouting of soybean sentinel plots is under way through most of
the soybean production areas of the U.S., including New York. Check
the New
York State Soybean Rust Information Center for updated information.
- Perdue
Extension has a new booklet on soybean rust that is worth
checking out.

Restoring Our
Seed: Seed-saving, once an essential skill passed from generation
to generation by traditional farmers, is almost a lost art. By growing
and saving seeds, each of us can become a link to restore food and
farming traditions in our own community
