Resources for Students

B.J. Harrison Library at MCC

The MCC Library is a place to find resources and information, as well as a popular place to study. Students can check out books and periodicals with their student ID's, use the copy machine, surf the internet, use the computers, look at college catalogs, research class projects, and borrow audio-visual equipment. Other features of the library are an audio and video area for student use, a lounge area in the periodical area, study carrels, and conference rooms for small group work. The media center portion of the library has audiovisual equipment for use on the campus. Equipment is also available to local organizations. The Media Center schedules all AV materials and equipment along with overseeing routine maintenance and repair of those items.

During fall and spring semesters, the library is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sundays from 5 to 9 p.m. Library services are not available on evenings preceding holidays and during academic holidays. Shorter hours are posted and maintained during the summer sessions.

Checking Out Materials – Student ID cards are needed to borrow MCC Library materials. Area residents can borrow library materials with a resident library card, which is issued at the circulation desk of the MCC Library. The library's collection can be searched through the PAC stations on the library floor or through the college's homepage on the Internet. The general library collection has a two week loan period.

Reference Materials – Reference materials can be used in the library. Reserve materials can be checked for library use only or else overnight if it is late in the day. Students can also arrange for an interlibrary loan from participating Iowa libraries.

Information Desk –A staff member is on duty whenever the Library is open to assist in locating and using resources. Individual computer and study carrels, tables, and conference rooms offer a variety of study areas.

Student ID cards – These are used to borrow library materials. General circulation materials (books, tapes, pamphlets, etc.) circulate for two weeks. Because reserve materials are used by many students, loan periods are usually two hours or overnight. Reserve material loaned overnight is due the following class day. Fines are assessed for all overdue materials.

Copy Machine – A coin-operated copy machine is available in the library. The library also has a microfilm printer which produces copies from both microfilm and microfiche at a nominal fee.

Interlibrary Loan Services – In addition to the library collection of more than 34,000 volumes and 300 periodicals, these services are available from several colleges and universities, offering access to information not available at MCC. There may be a charge for postage on books and for photocopied periodical articles. It is advisable to allow two weeks to obtain material.

Audiovisual Equipment – Students may use audiovisual equipment for class or activity related projects with the approval of the instructor or sponsor and media personnel. Please request equipment from the library well in advance.
