Our history

In November 1988, the CAB International Asia Regional Office (CABI-ARO) was established in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Agriculture (representing the Malaysian government).Subsequently, in 1997 the CABI South East Asia Regional Centre was formed.  This occurred when CABI-ARO became fully integrated with the Malaysian Centre of CABI Bioscience located within the campus of the Malaysian Agricultural Research & Development Institute (MARDI) in Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia.  In July 2006 we took on a wider mandate and became - CABI Southeast & East Asia.    
 

Our staff

 CABI Southeast & East Asia has 9 staff based at the office in Malaysia, many of whom have over 30 years of experience.

 Our activities

Equipped with a general office, a library and two laboratories connected to insect-screened houses, CABI-SEA carries out a wide range of activities, including:  

  • Conducting research & development on Bioscience and ICT/information
  • Conducting farmer participatory training and research activities
  • Organizing training courses for managers, scientists, information officers, extension workers and technicians
  • Planning and implementing study visits and training attachments
  • Co-supervising graduate/post-graduate students
  • Producing and introducing biological control agents
  • Executing consultancies
  • Conducting project development, co-ordination and implementation
  • Disseminating and marketing information products and materials
  • Linking countries with common interest areas through effective networking  

Our current projects include:

  • The development and production of a manual on IPM for Citrus in Negara Brunei Darussalam
  • Reduction of pesticide usage through IPM Implementation in Fruits, Vegetables and Rice in Brunei Darussalam
  • Enhancing, protecting and beneficial usage of indigenous microbial diversity in oil palm agroecosystems
  • Metabolic Profiling of Soil Microbial Communities in relation to Natural-N Application
  • Advancing IPM for Development in Vietnam

Future plans

We will be focusing on activities related to:

 bio-based approaches for invasive species management

 IPM/ICM development in support of sustainable production

 plant health and SPS issues

 knowledge networks and systems of innovation and farmer participatory learning & research - including appropriate support to national institutional human resource capacity building.
