Knowledge for development

What we do

CABI works to assist developing country institutions and programmes in the acquisition, management, communication, and effective use of agricultural and environmental information and knowledge in order to improve people’s lives.

We work with different stakeholders to:

  • facilitate the communication strategies of governments, extensionists, farmers, agribusiness and researchers
  • develop strategies to make researchers’ findings accessible to wide audiences
  • stimulate research programmes of relevance to farmers’ needs
  • develop systems for the communication of farmers’ knowledge
  • provide information that enables farmers to make informed decisions

We harness information and knowledge-management skills from across CABI to help to catalyse the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals by the international community. The beneficiaries of our projects range from researchers, educators and university libraries, to health professionals, extension agents and farmers.

How we do it

We facilitate better management, communication, and uptake of knowledge in agriculture and the environment. We do this by:

  • building capacity and providing training resources in information and knowledge management
  • consultancy to develop information and publishing strategies and business plans
  • surveying and assessing information needs at institution level
  • utilising appropriate information and communication technologies (ICTs) such as databases, compendia and farmer videos
  • training farmers through participatory innovation development

In partnership…

To achieve maximum impact with our initiatives we partner with a range of international, regional and national organizations: governments, development assistance agencies, UN agencies, NGOs, private foundations, the CGIAR, corporations, NARS and other developing world institutions including universities.
