Mission Statement

The mission of Career Services is to assist students in obtaining the most benefits possible from their college education through satisfying career placement upon graduation. All of the programs and services offered by Career Services are designed to facilitate the career development of students by exposing them to career planning, career options, decision-making skills, occupational information and reinforcement of appropriate work skills and attitudes.

About Career Services

Career Services is a vital part of the educational and student developmental process at Virginia State University. We provide career planning and placement assistance to currently enrolled VSU students and alumni.

Obtaining placement in the career field of your choice requires careful planning, acquired knowledge, and assistance. While your advisor, instructors, counselors, and/or other University personnel are available to help you, it is your responsibility to seek out those programs on campus that will provide the necessary tools to assist you in preparing for your career.

Our staff is available and eager to assist you in obtaining appropriate information that will enable you to determine career choices commensurate with your abilities, interests, and desired lifestyle; and upon graduation, obtain placement suitable to your academic achievements, career objectives, and desires.

Planning a career is quite different from getting a job. Taking a job involves getting work as it comes along and performing certain tasks whether for pay, as a volunteer, or for experience. Individuals take jobs, but they choose careers. Career planning is an individual activity, and a continuous process that helps you determine what you would like to do with your working life. It involves identifying your own interests and abilities, exploring options, setting goals, and implementing plans. It requires considerable thinking, work motivation, flexibility, and decision-making. Its main objective is to enable you to make economic and personal choices that will provide a satisfying, challenging, and fulfilling career.

One of the most important benefits from career planning is the recognition that you control your destiny, thus increasing your self-confidence and self-direction. Career planning does not solve all problems, but it does help to approach and cope more effectively with new problems. Get a head start by beginning the career planning process today!

Career counseling, an interpersonal process, is designed to assist students with career development problems. Career problems can include, but are not limited to, career indecision, work performance, and stress and adjustment. If you desire career counseling, career counselors will schedule individual appointments.
