To Use Public Transportation:

Accessible via Chestnut Hill East (#R7) or Chestnut Hill West (#R8) trains. Get off at Chestnut Hill stop and wait for "L" bus toward Plymouth Meeting or Plymouth Meeting Mall. Bus MUST say "Plymouth Meeting" or it won't pass close enough to the Arboretum. Ask to get off at the Germantown Ave. & Northwestern Avenue stop. Walk down Northwestern Avenue for .5 miles past Chestnut Hill College and the apartment complex until you come to the black wrought-iron gate of the Arboretum.

From Pennsylvania Turnpike:

Turnpike to exit 333 (old exit 25) (Norristown). Take Germantown Pike East (it becomes Germantown Avenue) for just over 3 miles; turn left on Northwestern Avenue. Arboretum entrance is about 1/4 mile on the right.

From the Northeast Extension:

When the Northeast Extension ends, take the turnpike west for one exit to 333 Norristown and Take Germantown Pike East (it becomes Germantown Avenue) for just over 3 miles; turn left on Northwestern Avenue. Arboretum entrance is about 1/4 mile on the right.

From downtown Philadelphia and western suburbs:

Detour Due to Construction on Germantown Ave

Cars only: Take Kelly Drive northwest to Lincoln Drive. Take Lincoln Drive; turn left on Allens Lane; turn right on Emlen St; (Emlen turns into Chresheim Valley Dr) turn left on Germantown Avenue. Drive through Chestnut Hill, and turn right on Northwestern Avenue. The Arboretum entrance is about 1/4 mile on the right.

Trucks and buses are not allowed on Lincoln Drive. Trucks and buses should follow the following set of directions from Philadelphia and Western Suburbs)...

All Vehicles: Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) to the Blue Route (476 N) -- exit 331B; get off at exit 19 (old exit 8) (Plymouth Meeting). Make a right onto Germantown Pike. Continue on Germantown Pike (it becomes Germantown Avenue) for just over 3 miles; turn left on Northwestern Avenue. Arboretum entrance is about 1/4 mile on the right.

From Northeast Philadelphia:

Take Roosevelt Boulevard to Levick Street. Turn on Levick and go two miles to Tookany Parkway, and make left; then go to first light and make a right on Cheltenham Avenue. After about 4 miles, Cheltenham ends at Papermill Road; go left on Papermill for two miles. At the top of the hill is Bethlehem Pike; cross Bethlehem Pike and bear right; you'll be on Stenton Avenue. Turn left on Northwestern Avenue, and turn left into Arboretum gate.

I-95 South to exit 7, the Blue Route (476 N); get off at exit 19 (old exit 8) (Plymouth Meeting). Make a right onto Germantown Pike. Continue on Germantown Pike (it becomes Germantown Avenue) for just over 3 miles; turn left on Northwestern Avenue. Arboretum entrance is about 1/4 mile on the right.

From Wilmington, Delaware and points south:

I-95 North to the Blue Route (476 N); get off at exit 19 (old exit 8) (Plymouth Meeting). Make a right onto Germantown Pike. Continue on Germantown Pike (it becomes Germantown Avenue) for just over 3 miles; turn left on Northwestern Avenue. Arboretum entrance is about 1/4 mile on the right.

From New York and Points North and East of Philadelphia:

From New York take the New Jersey Turnpike south (or from other points Route I-95 South) to the Pennsylvania Turnpike West to the Norristown exit (Old Exit 25 -- New Exit 333), Take Germantown Pike East (it becomes Germantown Avenue) for just over 3 miles; turn left on Northwestern Avenue. Arboretum entrance is about 1/4 mile on the right.

Biking from Center City

Get on the Schuylkill River Trail anywhere along the river. (If the train is blocking your way the Walnut Street Bridge has a ramp down to the trail.) Follow the trail along Kelly Drive untill you reach Ridge Ave. Cross the street and go left along Ridge Ave. The street crosses over a small bridge that goes over the Wissahickon Creek (A water fall will be on your right). Take your first right onto the bike trail directly after the bridge. This is the beginning on the Wissahickon Trail/Forbidden Drive. Follow this trail untill Northwestern Ave (about 7.5 miles) Turn right up Northwestern Ave. (you will see Northwestern Horse Stables on your right) Cross over Germantown Ave and continue on Northwestern Ave for another .5 miles. The entrance will be on your right. Bike racks are located next to the parking lot. Bikes are not permitted on any trails in the Arboretum. The entire ride is about 12 miles and will take approximatley 50 minutes.

Please note - Mountain Bikers need a permit to take the offroad trails in the park, this does not include Forbidden Drive. Please click here for additional information.
