Beginning December 1st 2008, the Sierra Vista Ranger District  is offering free use firewood permits to the public. Wood available consists primarily of manzanita, with small amounts of oak and juniper. All wood is dead and on the ground. Fuel wood has been made available as a result of fuel reduction activities to decrease wildfire spread and intensity. Most pieces are in sizes easy to handle and load. No cutting of fuel wood will be permitted. No green firewood is available.

The collection areas are located on the west side of the Huachuca Mountains, near the San Rafael Valley and can be accessed by a variety of routes. The Lochiel Collection Area is located along Forest Road 61, between the communities of Lochiel and Duquesne, east of Nogales, Arizona.  The Mowry Collection Area is located along Forest Road 214 and can be accessed from Patagonia and the Canelo Hills/Parker Canyon Lake areas.

Area maps will be included with permit and permit information. Caution is advised when driving in these areas during wet conditions. All travel is restricted to designated areas.

Permits are free, with a limit of 1 cord  per household, per year, for this program.
