2008 A Strategy for Developing an Improved Global Roads Data Set.  (February 2008, 25 pages, 1.1MB PDF). This report describes the steps required to develop and maintain an improved, public domain (i.e. free-of-charge restricted to attribution only) global spatial roads data set. The Report was one outcome of the Global Roads Workshop held October 1-2, 2007 at the Lamont Campus of Columbia University in Palisades, New York. The workshop was co-sponsored by the Consulative Group on International Agricultural Research-Consortium for Spatial Information (CGIAR-CSI), the International Council for Science’s Committee on Data for Science and Technology (ICSU-CODATA), and the World Resources Institute.

2008 Environmental Performance Index. (January 2008, 29 pages, 112 KB PDF). The 2008 EPI centers on two broad environmental protection objectives: (1) reducing environmental stresses on human health, and (2) promoting ecosystem vitality and sound natural resource management. These objectives are gauged using 25 indicators tracked in six policy categories: Environmental Health, Air Pollution (effects on ecosytems), Water (effects on ecosystems), Productive Natural Resources, Biodiversity and Habitat, and Climate Change. The EPI utilizes a proximity-to-target methodology focused on a core set of environmental outcomes linked to policy goals. The 2008 EPI includes 149 countries based on data availability.Formally released in Davos, Switzerland, at the 2008 Annuall Meeting of the World Economic Forum, the EPI is aAn initiative of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy (YCELP) and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) of Columbia University, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.

Towards Development of a High-Quality Public Domain Global Roads Database. (January 2006, 49 pages, 1.5 MB PDF). This report is a response to the existing demand for a global spatial public domain roads data set that has improved geographic and temporal coverage, consistent coding of road types, and clear documentation of sources. The report evaluates the best available public domain and commercial data sets; assesses the gaps in global coverage; and proposes a number of strategies for filling them. It identifies stakeholder organizations which might provide leadership or funding for its development, and closes with a proposed set of actions to begin the process. The report was produced by CIESIN and The World Bank, and was also published as an article.

Where the Poor Are: An Atlas of Poverty. (September 2006, 46 pages). The collection of 21 full-page poverty maps brings together maps from diverse continents and countries, depicting small area estimates of vital development indicators at unprecedented levels of spatial detail. The atlas reveals possible causal patterns and provides practical examples of how the data and tools have been used, and may be used, in applied decisions and poverty interventions. Where the Poor Are: An Atlas of Poverty is a product of the CIESIN Global Poverty Mapping Project, begun in 2004, which was made possible by support from the Japan Policy and Human Resource Development Fund, in collaboration with The World Bank.

Natural Disaster Hotspots: Case Studies. (July 2006, 200 pages). The second volume produced by the Natural Disaster Hotspots project, it presents a series of case studies undertaken to complement the global analysis of disaster risks presented in the first volume (see below, 2005: Natural Disaster Hotspots: A Global Risk Analysis). Three of the case studies address specific hazards—landslides, storm surges, and drought—and three address regional multi-hazard situations—in Sri Lanka, the Tana River basin in Kenya, and the city of Caracas, Venezuela. The Hotspots Project is a collaborative effort involving The World Bank, Columbia University’s Earth Institute, and a number of international partners, which aims to provide information to inform development strategies and to prioritize actions for reducing disaster risk.

Pilot 2006 Environmental Performance Index. (January 2006, 460 pages). A collaboration between CIESIN, the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, the World Economic Forum and the European Community's Joint Research Centre. The report evaluates a country's proximity to targets for 16 indicators and includes detailed sections on analysis and methodology, as well as country reports and data tables.

A Synthetic Assessment of the Global Distribution of Vulnerability to Climate Change.  (April 2006, 12.6 MB PDF). A report to advance the understanding of the nature of climate change risks and vulnerabilities. Scientists and researchers from Wesleyan University, the University of Illinois, the University of Maryland Joint Research Center for Global Change (JRCGC), the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) of the U.S. Department of Energy, and Columbia University together prepared the assessment and maps, which are available for download on the Web site, The Global Geographical Distribution of Vulnerability to Climate Change.

2005 Environmental Sustainability Index. (January 2005, 408 pages). A collaboration between CIESIN, the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, the World Economic Forum and the European Community's Joint Research Centre. The report provides sustainability measures for 146 countries, and includes detailed sections on analysis and methodology, as well as country reports and data tables.

Confidentiality Issues and Policies Related to the Utilization and Dissemination of Geospatial Data for Public Health Applications. (March 2005, 795KB PDF, 77 pages). In support of the NASA Public Health ApplicationS of Earth Science (PHASES) program, this report reviews the confidentiality and related ethical issues in the use of geospatial data for public health purposes. It includes both current and historical references to the ethical, legal, economic, and technical issues associated with confidentiality concerns. The report also provides examples of policies, procedures, and other strategies used to protect the confidentiality of geospatial data.
Natural Disaster Hotspots: A Global Risk Analysis. (March 2005, 145 pages, 29.42 MB PDF). This report published by the World Bank presents a global view of major natural disaster risk hotspots, which are areas at relatively high risk of loss from one or more natural hazards. It summarizes the results of an interdisciplinary analysis of the location and characteristics of hotspots for six natural hazards: earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, floods, drought, and cyclones. Data on these hazards are combined with state-of-the-art data on the subnational distribution of population and economic output and past disaster losses to identify areas at relatively high risk from one or more hazards. CIESIN staff led the data integration and analysis effort. PDF ICON: Global Infrastructure: The Potential of SRTM Data to Break New Ground
Remote Sensing in Support of Ecosystem Management Treaties and Transboundary Conservation (November 2005, 700KB PDF, 98 pages). This report addresses two strands of remote sensing applications—those addressing treaty-related concerns and those applied to transboundary conservation—both of which are united by a concern for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management in an increasingly connected world of agreements and bilateral cooperation on the environment.

Urban Population, Poverty, and Sustainable Development: Emerging Issues for UNFPA. (August 2006, 23 pages, 349 KB PDF). In 2005 the Population and Development Branch of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) asked CIESIN to undertake a study that would help the agency identify its strategic advantage for addressing urban poverty and sustainable development. In close collaboration with UNFPA, CIESIN produced a background paper, conducted a survey of UNFPA country offices, and organized a workshop attended by distinguished experts on urban population, poverty, and sustainable development. This report represents a distillation of all three elements.
