Population & Migration

ERS is the leading Federal source for demographic analysis of rural and small town America. This research focuses on the trend of population change, the extent of in- and out-migration, and factors explaining regional population diversity. The information facilitates informed public debate regarding rural economic development prospects and the well being of at-risk populations, including children, the elderly, racial-ethnic minorities, and immigrants.

Spotlights

New Patterns of Hispanic Settlement in Rural America—This report documents the increased presence of Hispanics in rural America, analyzes their socioeconomic well being, and measures the degree of residential separation between Hispanics and non-Hispanic Whites in rural communities.

Rural population change—County population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show continued growth in the nonmetro population, but at a rate well below that seen during the 1990s.
