Rural Labor & Education

ERS examines the economic and social forces that affect supply and demand among rural workers. The agency provides information and analysis of the employment, earnings, and education levels of the rural population, as well as the economic performance of rural labor markets.


Spotlights

Low-Skill Employment and the Changing Economy of Rural America—The share of jobs with low-skill requirements fell faster in rural than in urban areas during the 1990s. This study explores the role of industry and occupation change on the long-term decline of low-skill share, and the impact of these changes on rural earnings.

Education as a Rural Development Strategy—As the demand for workers with higher educational qualifications rises, many rural policymakers have come to view local educational levels as a critical determinant of job and income growth. This article discusses workforce education and economic growth, and the questions faced by policymakers.
