The training program, situated in Boston University's School of Public Health, has as its objective to prepare students to use the most sophisticated methods currently available to advance the state of knowledge and develop new methods in community-oriented environmental epidemiology. Against a departmental setting which is committed to advancing the research agenda with the use of such tools as functional magnetic resonance imaging, development of new methods such as dynamical systems models or lattice formulations, and integration of disciplines such as mathematics, urban studies, economics, toxicology and anthropology, this training program aims to prepare students to recognize the social context in which scientific research takes place and to work within the complex mix of federal, state and local agencies, individual and organized community members and elements of the private sector. The training program consists of a required core curriculum that includes instruction in epidemiology, toxicology, and biostatistics, followed by more advanced courses to accommodate the student's particular interests and strategies.
