NEFSC Publication Lists

Lists for 1977-83 were issued only as the “tables of contents” associated with the annual, paper-copy-only compilation of “Collected Reprints of the Northeast Fisheries [Science] Center” (i.e., the “CR” series). Each issue of the CR series included a copy of each publication by NEFSC employees. Lists for 1984-86 were issued as annual, paper-only bibliographies of “Northeast Fisheries Science Center Publications and Reports” (i.e., the “PR” series). The 1984 issue of the PR series included publications only. The 1985 and 1986 issues of the PR series included both publications and reports. Primary purpose of the CR and PR series was documentation of Center publications and reports. The list for 1987 was issued as “An Indexed Bibliography of Northeast Fisheries [Science] Center Publications and Reports” (i.e., the “IB” series). Lists for 1988-91 were issued as “An Indexed Bibliography of Northeast Fisheries [Science] Center Publications, Reports, and Abstracts.” The 1987-89 IBs were annual lists; the 1990-91 IB was a biennial list; there was(were) no IB(s) for 1992-93. The IB series expanded the purpose of the annual/biennial lists to include not only documentation, but also reference. The reference role of the IBs was accomplished through subject and author indices. The subject index was composed of three subindices covering taxa/species, geographic areas, and research disciplines, and was so customized to facilitate its use by those in the fisheries research and management fields. Lists for 1994 and later reverted to annual, nonindexed bibliographies of “Northeast Fisheries Science Center Publications, Reports, and Abstracts” (i.e., the “PRA” series).

Inclusion of works in the CR and PR series was unqualified. Inclusion of works in the IB series was qualified; only those works which were specifically identified and provided by the NEFSC's Executive Staff were included. Inclusion of works in the PRA series was even further qualified; to be considered an “NEFSC” work, a publication, report, or abstract must have been submitted to and cleared by the NEFSC’s manuscript/abstract/webpage review system, and a reprint/photocopy of the published/distributed version of the publication, report, or abstract must have been forwarded to the NEFSC’s Editorial Office for library archiving.

Editorial treatment of bibliographic entries varies by list and is largely based on the CBE [Council of Biology Editors] Style Manual, third and fifth editions (Bethesda, MD: Council of Biology Editors). Three abbreviations used throughout the bibliographies need to be explained: 1) “n.p.” means the work -- usually an abstract -- is not paginated; 2) “n.n.k.” means the volume number of the work is not known -- a result of the bibliographic compiler not having the actual work in hand in order to prepare its bibliographic entry; and 3) “p.n.k.” means the page number(s) of the work is(are) not known -- again, a result of the bibliographic compiler not having the actual work in hand in order to prepare its bibliographic entry.

Also, there are many foreign recipients of the issues of these bibliographies, most of whom do not use English as a primary language. Because English-language-based acronyms are particularly difficult to comprehend by non-English-using readers, the standardized abbreviations of these acronyms -- when such acronyms appear in series titles -- have been included within squared brackets immediately following the acronyms.

Availability of reprints of publications and of photocopies of reports and abstracts varies for each work. Under all circumstances, though, any initial request for a reprint or photocopy should be directed to the sole/senior NEFSC author of the work (i.e., as depicted by all capital letters in the bibliographic entry).

For the 1987-89 lists, all requests should be mailed to the appropriate author c/o Northeast Fisheries Science Center Editorial Office, 166 Water St., Woods Hole, MA 02543-1026.
For the 1990-91 list, all requests should be mailed to the appropriate author at the address appended to the bibliographic entry.
For the 1994 and later lists, all requests should be mailed to the appropriate author according to the two-letter code at the end of the bibliographic entry:

For 2000 and later lists, each bibliographic entry contains a link which opens an e-mail request to the senior NEFSC author or a contact acting in his/her stead. Requesting a copy of a work via e-mail is recommended. To request a copy of a work by postal mail, refer to the two-letter codes above.

The NEFSC’s Woods Hole Laboratory Library maintains an extensive, although not complete, archive for publications and reports by NEFSC authors, and may be able to supply a reprint or photocopy if the author cannot do so. Secondary requests to the library for a publication or report should be in writing (National Marine Fisheries Service, Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Wood Hole Laboratory Library, 166 Water St., Woods Hole, MA 02543-1026). Expect a significant delay in receiving a reprint or photocopy when requesting it from the library rather than from the author.

Abstracts almost always have less scientific standing and permanence than publications and reports. For these reasons, the Woods Hole Laboratory Library does not maintain an archive for abstracts. Secondary requests to the NEFSC’s Editorial Office for an abstract should be in writing (National Marine Fisheries Service, Northeast Fisheries Science Center Editorial Office, 166 Water St., Woods Hole, MA 02543-1026). Again, expect a significant delay in receiving a photocopy when requesting it from the editorial office rather than from the author.
