Individuals with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), regardless of age, are eligible for Medicare.  The United States Renal Data System combines data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) with other databases to provide information on ESRD patients.

VIReC has obtained USRDS data for all individuals with ESRD.   In addition, VIReC has a crosswalk file that allows linking the individual identifier (USRDS ID) to the real or scrambled SSNs for veterans in the VHA cohort.  The number of individuals with ESRD found in the VHA cohort for each year is listed in the table below.

2005 Researcher’s Guide to the USRDS Database

Data Available

The USRDS data are provided in groups of files called CDs.  The Core CD contains the most frequently used files and is needed for use of the Transplant CD, Hosptial CD, or any Medicare claims files.  The Core CD, Transplant CD, and Hospital CD contain cumulative files that are current through 2005.  Some of these files contain data since 1973, when Medicare first began covering ESRD patients.

In addition to obtaining 1999-2003 Medicare claims data for all patients with ESRD, we also have obtained Medicare claims for patients involved in two special studies, the Dialysis Morbidity & Mortality Study (DMMS) and the Case Mix Adequacy Study.  Non-claims data for these studies are found in the Core CD.  A desciption of these special studies can be found in the research guide (above).

VIReC has also obtained two years of "pre-dialysis" claims data for patients who initiated dialysis during 2000 and 2001.  For patients who initiated dialysis during 2000, we have claims for 1998 and 1999; for patients who began dialysis during 2001, we have claims for 1999 and 2000.

Below is a list of the files found in each CD with a link to its SAS® Proc Contents.
