It was not unusual for Édouard Manet to alter, manipulate, cut apart, or add to paintings as he worked.

He was known to scrape down paint surfaces, exposing the ground in order to produce certain effects, or to rub out
an unwanted area and rework it. He painted over existing works and revised his compositions
as he proceeded. Emile Zola, novelist, critic, leading proponent of naturalism in literature and art, and friend of Manet, remarked, "In beginning a picture he could never say how that picture would come out." Manet can be characterized as an artist who was intrigued by the process of painting itself. |
