Manet's signature on The Dead Toreador

Manet's monogram on The Bullfight

The two paintings could not be physically reunited today. Not only are two sections missing, but Manet consciously altered each painting to read as a separate composition. Unlike the dismembered Execution of Maximilian (National Gallery, London), in which the surviving fragments have been reunited on a single canvas, Manet here repainted and then signed each image. The Dead Toreador was signed over the newly applied olive green paint at the lower right, and Manet's monogram appears on The Bullfight at the lower left. His signature confirms that these works are not fragments but completed paintings, even though they originated from a much larger whole.
