Updated - Proposed Funding levels for : Diseases, Conditions, and Research, FY 2003 - FY 2005:

NIH categorizes its spending in a variety of manners to satisfy diverse reporting requirements.  Of course, we track spending for specific Diseases (Alzheimer’s Disease, Breast Cancer, etc.), but we also track our expenditures for various conditions (Infertility, Obesity, etc.) and specific areas of research (Genetics, Substance Abuse, etc.).  We annually update both our actual and projected expenditures (based on the current year funding level and the President’s Budget funding level).  See the link below for our latest estimates.  Note that this table includes estimates for research in many diseases/conditions/research areas which are also included under other disease/conditions/research areas, because the research contributes to multiple fields of research.  The table is therefore not additive.
