Questions You May Want to Ask a Consultant
Class
* Are there any limitations to class size (maximum or minimum)?
* Can you tailor your course to the specific needs of a group, e.g., scientists?
Duration
* Do you have sessions of various lengths, e.g. 3-hours, 1-, 2-, or 3-days?
* Could you send us an agenda or course description for each class?
* For classes that are taught for 1 or more days, what hours do they include?
Qualifications
* What is the trainer’s experience with Plain Language training?
Location & Facilities
* Where do you usually conduct the training?
* Can it be at the client’s site?
* What will you need? Room size and layout? A/V? Copying help?
* Do you require representative sample documents from us? If yes, when do you need them? Are you able to proceed without them?
Cost
* How much will it cost?
*

Does the cost include all materials? Classroom rental (if not using an NIH facility)? Travel?

* Are there additional preparation costs to tailor the training to our specific needs?
* Once you’ve tailored the course, how much would repeat sessions cost?
References
* Can we send someone to audit a class that you are teaching to another group?
* Could you provide us with a couple of references of individuals who have recently taken training from you?
* If we believe that a particular one of your trainers would be appropriate for us, can we request that person specifically?
Evaluations
* Did the training meet the course objectives?
* Was the teacher engaging?
* Was the teacher prepared? And knowledgeable about Plain Language?
* Did the teacher understand the issues facing you?
* Was the class interactive?
* Were materials relevant, e.g., are they typical of what you might have to write?
* Were materials easy to follow?
* Did you benefit from the training?
* Would you recommend the course to others?
Remember - You are the customer, so you decide the scope of training.
