Shipping of Dangerous Goods and Infectious Materials

The NIH is offering a one-day certification course for all personnel involved in the shipping of infectious substances, diagnostic specimens, biological specimens and dry ice classified as "dangerous goods."

Register for the Shipping Biological Materials Training

This one-day course provides personnel with the knowledge and certification to be a shipper of infectious substances and diagnostic specimens. A general awareness of existing regulations for the transportation of Dangerous Goods as specified in the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR) is provided. As most infectious substances and diagnostic specimens are shipped by air, the more restrictive air transport regulations will be the focus of the course. The course will use, as its core reference, the 46th Edition of the International Air Transport Association Dangerous Goods Regulations (IATA DGR).

* One of the key features of the class is a hands-on exercise involving the use of actual examples of shipping materials, vials, coolers, labels, shipper's declarations, etc., to demonstrate actual shipping details of particular shipments.

* A thorough 20 question comprehension exam, including the completion of a shipping documentation, is given at the end of the course. Certificates are only issued upon successful completion of the exam by each participant. A post-exam review is given to discuss any questions of the regulations by the participants.

Course materials include a classroom manual with pertinent references from the current 49 CFR and the 46th Edition of the IATA DGR. The class is being offered by the Division of Occupational Health and Safety, Office of Research Services.
