CDC is working with
Swope Health Services of Kansas City, Missouri to implement the
Healthy Steps for Young Children
pediatric practice model in Swope’s pediatric clinic. The model will be
assessed for its effectiveness in increasing the number of children who
receive Early
and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) services, and
developmental screening in particular, to ensure that their physical and
psychosocial developmental needs are being met.
Project Goals
The Pediatric Screening and Intervention Project promotes the goals of
Healthy People 2010. Major
project goals include:
-
Early identification of cognitive, social or emotional, and physical
developmental problems in children and adolescents, and appropriate
referral for further assessment and intervention, when indicated.
-
An increased number of children and adolescents who receive appropriate
preventive health care, including EPSDT services and immunizations.
-
A health care home for all children, and improved care coordination among
primary care, early intervention, and other services.
-
Reduced numbers of children and adolescents with chronic illnesses (such as
obesity, asthma, and diabetes) through health maintenance and education.
-
Increased awareness among women and families of the need for early prenatal
care and the importance of regular preventive health check-ups for infants
and children.
