About the Workshop: Assessing Wildfire Hazards in the Home Ignition Zone
The national Firewise Communities Program offers a two-day workshop that covers the myths of wildland/urban interface fire, the history and context of W/UI fire disasters, sequential elements of a W/UI fire disaster, research and case studies, risk factors in the home ignition zone, information needed to conduct an assessment, the general health of the ecosystem, inspecting the home ignition zone, accessibility in case of a wildfire emergency, documenting an assessment, and much more. This workshop also includes Q & A, class discussion and three classroom exercises where participants will perform home ignition zone evaluations, practicing the information they have learned. This is an ideal course for wildfire specialists, forestry professionals, insurance professionals, and others interested in providing important wildfire risk information to residents.

The workshop was developed by the Firewise Communities Program and the Wildland/Urban Interface Fire Working Team of the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG). It is a complete revision of Inspecting Fire Prone Properties (P-110) developed in 1991 under the auspices of the NWCG Wildland Fire Education Working Team.

Much of the technical content of this course is based directly on wildfire home ignition research conducted by Jack Cohen, Research Scientist from the USDA Forest Service's Rocky Mountain Research Station in Missoula, Montana. His research on the causes and context of Wildland/Urban Interface fire disasters has created a body of knowledge for application by others. His conception of the Home Ignition Zone and its application has guided the Firewise Communities efforts nationally, regionally, and locally.

Conducting Your Own Home Ignition Zone Workshop
You can offer your own workshop for individuals that are interested in learning about assessing wildfire hazards in the home ignition zone. Materials for teaching the class may be ordered from the Firewise Online Catalog. It's recommended that you order one Instructor Package (ICN 14812) and enough copies of the Student Handouts (ICN14606) for all class participants. To get the best results from this material, Firewise recommends that two days be allowed for teaching the class and a maximum class size of 50 students.
