Streambank Protection: Section 14 Minnehaha Creek WPA Walls, Minnesota
Location/Description
|
The Minnehaha Creek WPA (Works Progress Administration) Walls are located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The historic WPA walls are just upstream and downstream of Minnehaha Falls and provide bank stabilization on both sides of Minnehaha Creek. The project area is entirely within the Minnehaha Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is part of the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway which is both a National and State scenic byway along with being connected to the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.
The walls were constructed in the late 1930s or early 1940s and allow for access to Minnehaha Falls and the Mississippi River. In 2006, Minnehaha Park had an estimated 800,000 visitors and the Minnehaha Regional Trail had an estimated 1,700,000 visitors.
|
Erosion is undermining the stability of the walls on both sides of the creek. Currently, the walls have gaps of 1 to 2 feet underneath the concrete footing that is supporting the walls. The walls have experienced some recent failures with the portion of the wall closest to the falls toppling over, and some areas downstream have sloughed due to lack of structural support.
At this time, failure is imminent and action needs to be taken in the near future to save this piece of Minnesota’s history. The area of protection would include approximately 1,390 feet of the walls, which are located on both sides of the creek, along with an area immediately downstream of the walls that is experiencing bank erosion.

The project is scheduled for completion in March 2009.
