DoD Packaging Awards

The winners of the 2006 Packaging Excellence Award are Mr. Joaquin Patlan, packaging section chief, and his team from the Packaging management office at the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center at Tinker Air Force Base.

The Packaging team initiated a formalized and exhaustive inspection program which eliminated shipping damage to high value, critical assets. They inspected the pack, and packaging of 29 B-52 Radomes, 34 B-1 Low Observable Antennas, and 34 Gimbal Arrays and certified them to be in full compliance before shipment. Prior to this program assets damaged in shipment resulted in grounded aircraft and work stoppages.

Mr. Patlan and his team developed a MS ACCESS utility to convert a hard copy database of packaging deviations to electronic format. This conversion allows the packaging office to analyze the trends of packaging deviations from operating bases.
The packaging office achieved $125,000 in cost saving through container reclamation. Additionally they provided shipping, preservation, and packing guidance to their supported units and worked to increase the awareness of the importance of packaging.

The Marines of P3 handled, in support of forward and rear operations, $641,000,000 in material. They ran 24 hour operations from three operating bases in Iraq and their home base of Camp Pendleton, CA. Despite working in a high tempo, demanding environment, wrought with security concerns, the P3 section consistently exceeded their mission requirements
A recurring requirement at P3 is the creation of packaging for helicopter tail booms. The preservation, packaging, and packing unit came up with a new and more cost effective solution for packing. Using their technical know-how and years of experience, P3 created a lighter and more efficient method for constructing the containers that house tail booms.
Their versatility and technical know-how allowed P3 to create unique packaging solutions for assets ranging from F/A 18 wings to complete motorcycles.
The efforts of the Preservation, Packaging, and Packing unit extended beyond the preparation of assets for shipment into areas such as traffic management and channel distribution. 1st Supply Battalion’s Preservation, Packaging, and Packing team contributed in many supply chain functional areas.
