Crops, Dairy and Livestock Team
The Crops, Dairy and Livestock Team provides information and technical
support to agronomic (corn, hay, alfalfa) farmers, who are growing animal
feed and raising livestock. The program has particular expertise in monitoring
nutrient use and has successfully convinced most livestock farmers in
Massachusetts that manure is the best nutrient for their crops. Extra
fertilizers are a waste and end up polluting ground or surface water.
The team's nutrient management planning is helping to protect water from
this pollution while saving farmers money.
The team has developed a simple computer program to help farmers tailor
nutrient management plans to their fields. This past year 15 farmers participated
in on-farm demonstrations of the method. Farmers are also relying on the
team for advice on pest control management. This past year the team's
staff of 6 researchers and outreach educators responded rapidly to an
army worm attack on hay and other grass crops. Within a week, the Crops,
Dairy and Livestock team and the Turf program helped growers contain the
insect damage on these essential annual feed crops.
