About the Pesticide Education Team

The Pesticide Education Team's primary responsibility is a big one — training 7,000 pesticide applicators in Massachusetts on safe practices for using pesticides. In the past year, the team has educated more than 1,500 farmers, landscapers, lawn care professionals, exterminators and municipal employees on pesticide application and safety. In cooperation with the Pesticide Board of the Massachusetts Department of Food and Agriculture, the team also evaluates licensed applicators to determine if they need more training. Refresher courses are available to provide "state of knowledge" training.

The team has worked closely with the Integrated Pest Management Team to teach school custodians and daycare providers about the Act to Protect Children and Families from Harmful Pesticides. The state law was passed in 2000 and requires schools and daycare providers in the Commonwealth to fight pests with means other than pesticides. In 2001, the team conducted 21 workshops and trained 670 people on alternative methods for controlling pests in schools and daycares.

For more information on the team's workshops contact Patricia Vittum at (413) 545-0268 or visit the Pesticide Education Team website.
