Introduction to the Safe Drinking Water Act

Course Description: This course covers the history of drinking water regulation in the United States prior to SDWA's enactment, as well as an overview of SDWA's evolution up to and including the 1996 Amendments. It describes the process used to set drinking water standards and introduces the three major programs under SDWA. The module also discusses SDWA's relationship to the Clean Water Act.

Intended for: State, Tribal and EPA Regional staff, technical assistance providers and water system personnel.

Duration: This course can be presented in one day, or combined with other SDWA introductory modules found in this Course Catalog for a longer training session, or presented in web format in 3 hours.

Overview of the Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act

Course Description: This course provides an overview of both the Clean Water Act (CWA) and the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), focusing on their interrelationships. It reviews the histories of SDWA and the CWA and discusses the key concepts and programs of each statute.

Intended for: The primary audience is new Federal employees, as the course focuses on the Federal implementation of SDWA and the CWA. However, new State and Tribal staff could also benefit.

SDWA, PWSS and the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations

Course Description: This course combines Introduction to the Safe Drinking Water Act and Introduction to the Public Water System Supervision (PWSS) Program. It also discusses the national primary drinking water regulations (NPDWRs) in detail.
