Research Interests
- Genetic enhancement of disease resistance and grain quality in oat.
- Molecular marker mapping and use in selection.
- Wide hybrid crosses including diploid and tetraploid oat x hexaploid cultivated oat and oat x corn.
- Oat gene isolation, sequencing, and expression.
Current or Planned Experiments
- Develop and test polymorphism of new PCR-based markers for oat.
- Characterize by cytological and molecular marker analysis a monosomic series in oat.
- Identify molecular marker linkages to disease resistance and seed quality traits for marker assisted selection in oat.
- Characterize oat/corn partial hybrids produced via oat x corn crosses.
- Develop sets of oat-corn radiation hybrids for corn gene cloning and physical mapping.
- Develop enhanced germplasms for use by oat breeders.
Laboratory Personnel
- Hedera Porter (Biological Science Technician)
- Candida Cabral (Ph.D. Student)
