Here is a list of presentations on HAZUS-MH models, methodology, and its application in communities across the nation.
CDMS Web Portal Version 1.0: The standardized role-based application to update statewide HAZUS-MH datasets
CDMS is a complimentary tool to HAZUS-MH MR3 that provides users with the capability to update and manage statewide datasets, which are currently used to support analysis in HAZUS-MH. CDMS greatly simplifies and streamlines the process for updating statewide datasets, and represents an important milestone in the ongoing development of the HAZUS-MH technology.
Chief Technology Officer, DHS, Offers Guidance on Integrating HAZUS-MH with Other Geospatial Tools and Programs
Dan Cotter, Chief Technology Officer, Department of Homeland Security, presentation on The Role of HAZUS-MH in Geospatial Preparedness. This presentation emphasizes several key points. The success of HAZUS-MH and other models will continue to be a function of three key factors: 1) model quality; 2) modeler expertise; and 3) good data. It is not enough to have a quality model, results need to be shared and customers need to work off of common data sets. "Mitigators" are in the best position to champion and steward common operational geospatial data for use within the emergency management community. Read full story and download presentation.
GIS and HAZUS-MH: HAZUS Applications for Catastrophic Planning (2007 National HAZUS Users Conference)
HAZUS-MH continues to play an important role in advancing one of FEMA’s priorities – planning for catastrophic earthquakes and hurricanes in the United States. This presentation outlines the benefits of HAZUS Applications for Catastrophic Planning.
Harris County Risk Assessment & Mitigation Using HAZUS-MH (2007 National HAZUS Users Conference, Annie Ding, PhD, CivilTech)
Harris County, Texas, local officials turned to CivilTech to prepare a risk assessment, among the largest studies of its kind in the United States. This presentation highlights the benefits of HAZUS for Risk Assessment and Mitigation.
Using HAZUS-MH to Assess Tsunami Risk (2007 National HAZUS Users Conference, Bill Bohn, Tetra Tech)
This presentation focuses on non-traditional uses of HAZUS-MH to assess tsunami hazard.
Using HAZUS-MH for Comprehensive Planning(2007 National HAZUS Users Conference, Bill Bohn, Tetra Tech)
As HAZUS-MH becomes more widely used as a tool for comprehensive planning, best practices are emerging and are being documented.
Optimizing Your Use of HAZUS through HAZUS User Groups and HAZUS.org (2007 National HAZUS Users Conference)
User groups throughout the country have found enormous benefits and opportunities to develop successful projects through collaboration, combining resources and the sharing of information, data, and tips on software usage.
HAZUS-MH Florida HAZUS User Group (2007 National HAZUS Users Conference)
FEMA has led efforts to standardize HAZUS-MH “templates” and operating procedures to ensure that the model outputs are used effectively and responsibly. This presentation examines the roles of FEMA, states and local governments in the use of HAZUS-MH in managing hurricane operations, including lessons learned and guidance for other users. It was presented by Rick Burgess, Punta Gorda, Florida, and Chair of the Florida HUG.
Florida HAZUS User Group Data Update Project (2007 National HAZUS Users Conference)
A presentation that focuses on the Florida HAZUS User Group and Data Update Projects. Data needs assessments and strategies are discussed.
Application of HAZUS-MH to Support Hurricane Disaster Operations (2007 National HAZUS Users Conference)
This presentation focuses on seven categories of HAZUS-MH Analyses – Area of Projected Damage; Population at Risk; Expected Damage to Essential Facilities; Expected Sheltering Requirements; Expected Residential Damage; Debris Generated; Mitigation Operations. The Role of HAZUS-MH in Geospatial Preparedness is also covered.
Using HAZUS-MH in Research Post-Event Clearinghouse (2007 National HAZUS Users Conference)
This presentation highlights the role of HAZUS-MH in support of hazards and social research, and the applications of this research to support emergency management decision-making. Topics addressed include the role of HAZUS-MH in the Hurricane Katrina and Rita GIS Clearinghouse, the use of HAZUS-MH to support measurement of social vulnerability, and the role of HAZUS-MH in supporting seismic research.
Post-Disaster Redevelopment Planning with HAZUS-MH(2007 National HAZUS Users Conference)
Best practices in the use of HAZUS-MH for risk assessment and comprehensive planning will are among the topics addressed in this presentation. Hillsborough County, Florida is among the growing number of local jurisdictions that is using HAZUS-MH to support risk assessment and comprehensive planning.
The Use of HAZUS for Managing Disaster Operations (2007 National HAZUS Users Conference)
Since Hurricane Isabel in 2003, FEMA and several states have used HAZUS-MH to support decision making in a hurricane operation. Since that time, FEMA has led efforts to standardize HAZUS-MH “templates” and operating procedures to ensure that the model outputs are used effectively and responsibly. This presentation examine the roles of FEMA, states and local governments in the use of HAZUS-MH in managing hurricane operations, including lessons learned and guidance for other users. The HAZUS-MH Hurricane Validation Study is also discussed. The Use of HAZUS for Managing Disaster Operations was presented by Joseph Rachel, FEMA Region IV.
Role of Data in Use of HAZUS-MH for Risk Assessment and Preparedness (2007 National HAZUS Users Conference)
Acknowledging that inventory data is critical to accurate HAZUS-MH analyses, FEMA has developed and led several initiatives to improve inventory data and use of the data for risk assessments, mitigation and preparedness planning. This presentation highlights the role of FEMA Region X in a proactive approach to geospatial preparedness and state support. The Role of Data in Use of HAZUS-MH for Risk Assessment and Preparedness was presented by Joseph Toland, FEMA Region X.
