GOVERNOR CELEBRATES 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF `IOLANI PALACE

August 17 - Governor Lingle participated in an official procession and ceremony commemorating the 125th anniversary of the opening of ‘Iolani Palace, which occurred on August 17, 1882. The Governor followed members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha, Hale ‘O Na Ali‘i, Ahahui Ka‘ahumanu and the Daughters and Sons of Hawaiian Warriors into the Throne Room of the palace, where she presented ho‘okupu (an offering) of ilima lei.

King David Kalakaua and Queen Kapi‘olani took up residence in ‘Iolani Palace in December of 1882. It is the only royal palace used as an official residence by a reigning monarch in the United States and is registered as a National Historic Landmark.
