The Office of the Public Health Service Historian maintains a working collection of books and pamphlets (primary and secondary sources) relating to the history of the Public Health Service (PHS) and of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). In addition, the Office has a vertical file collection with historical information on PHS programs, activities, and key individuals. Much of the material in these files is photocopied rather than original, and secondary rather than primary, but the files do contain some original and primary material. The files are divided into biographical, institutional, and subject categories. The books and files are not formally cataloged. The Office also houses a photograph collection of several thousand images, the vast majority of which document PHS (and, to a much lesser extent, HHS) activities and people. Some of these images are duplicated in other collections, but many of them are unique items. These images are cataloged in the Parklawn Health Library's online catalog, which may be searched on the internet http://opac.psc.gov. |

There are folders under the "Minorities" subject heading in the vertical file collection on "African-Americans in Health Fields," "African Americans in PHS/HHS," and "African Americans PHS/HHS Programs." In addition, there is some material (largely published articles and papers) on the Tuskegee Syphilis Study under "Syphilis" in the "Diseases" section of the files. There are also biographical folders on a dozen or more prominent African-Americans who worked in the health field in the biographical section of the files. The photograph collections include photographs of some African Americans who were employed by or otherwise involved with PHS/HHS, and photographs relating to PHS/HHS programs for African Americans. |
