Role/Crops/Team:


Ms. McClurg assists the entomologist and curatorial staff with tests to determine appropriate insects to use in controlled pollination of various crops grown in field and greenhouse cages. Honey bees are the primary insect pollinator utilized at NCRPIS; other insect pollinators include houseflies, blue bottle flies, bumblebees, Osmia bees, and alfalfa leafcutter bees. Ms. McClurg incubates and supplies flies and alfalfa leafcutter bees to field and greenhouse cages on a weekly basis throughout the year; she assists the entomologist with other pollinator tasks as needed. She also assists curatorial staff by identifying insect pests of concern in increase plots and stored seed lots and searches for treatment options. Ms. McClurg has conducted standard host plant resistance evaluations for European corn borer and corn earworm in many of the maize accessions held at the station. She helped develop a method of determining resistance of cultivated sunflowers to sunflower moth.
